Waxing tips?

I usually wax my truck about every two months, but Im not too impressed with the results.

I first used Rain-X wax... BUffed off easily, but didnt really make it stand out.

Then tried NXT wax... WAY to hard to buff off... wont try that again.

Last couple times I waxed, I used mothers Gold Class. NIce stuff, just not as... VAAA, VAAA, VOOM! as I want it..

I wash the truck throughly and dry it. Then I apply the wax with the applicator. Let it dry for a few 5-10 mins, then wipe/ buff off with a new terry cloth.

What am I doing wrong? DO I need more than one coat? Do I need an orbital buffer? Wrong products?

The only products I can get are things they carry at Wal-Mart, Auto zone, O-Rielys Auto Parts, or Advanced Auto.

HELP! I want my truck to be SHINY!

Try liquid glass....that stuff is amazing. It's not a wax though...it's a polish, but it's the only stuff I use. Very easy, last a looong time and looks reat. you can wax on top too, if you like.

I found buffing NXT wax off by hand was not very difficult. Did you put it on too thick? I really like NXT or Meguiar's #26 yellow wax. Putting it on too thick will make life more difficult.

I've used NXT wax a few times on different vehicles. I would let it sit for more than 5-10 minutes. I would need to double check but I believe it says on the container to apply to entire vehicles. If not....I would wait more than 5-10 minutes. I would wait about 15-20 minutes. Then buff off by hand. It's by far the easiest wax I've used.

try some meguiars clay. if you are having problems getting it to really pop, this is the stuff for you. it's a paint cleaning method, and it will make the paint smoother than when it left the factory. you can search on here for tips on claying. after you clay, apply a good coat of either gold class or NXT (i am a big meguiars fan) and you will be gleamin'

Nxt has a waiting time of 20 minutes and comes off pretty easy.

...but, as is true with most synthetic products, if you're wanting to apply a 'top coat' carnauba product or another coat of NXT, the recommended wait time is 12+ hours (depending on environmental conditions) to allow the product to properly set up...

If you're not impressed with your results, it might not be your wax. If you do a little searching through this forum, you'll find a wealth of information on how to make your truck really shine. One thing you will always find true though is that there are no miracle products - even some of those mentioned to you already. Just like a fabulous paint job on a car (or truck), the last step - spraying on the paint - is not what makes a great paint job. It's all in the preparation. So to for a great wax job.

I'd suggest looking through any number of posts from RockPick, Boss 429 and others who can lead you (step by step) through a process that will make your truck truly glow. If it doesn't glow right now, it might take a little elbow grease. The results are really worth it though. Just don't count on anything that really works being really easy. A great shine takes some work.

Finally, remember that anybody who tells you that "Product X" took my truck from a faded, pitted, oxidized, scratched, dented, etc. piece of junk to a class winner at the local car show is probably lying. That or they're selling Product X.

Whoa! You're saying I could park the truck in the garage, apply wax to the entire truck in the morning, and buff it off at night?

Is that safe? I'm always scared that the wax will ruin the paint if it stays on too long. I've seen vehicles that have been waxed/polished in the sun and it ruin the paint.

The truck is about 1 years and a half old. Is that too soon to use a clay bar on it? I was always under the impression that the clay bar was slightly abrasive and not good to use on brand new vehicles.

If you cant tell, I'm pretty new to detailing vehicles.

Nope, that is not what RP was saying. He was saying... if you want to add a second coat of any product, you should wait 12 hours or so before you apply and remove the next layer. This gives the previous layer (that you applied and wiped off) a chance to cure, bond, dry, or whatever one wants to call it.

Although, if NXT was applied and allowed to sit overnight in a garage (no moisture), it would probably still remove easily the next day. However, there is no need, or advantage to doing that. NXT is ready to remove in 10 to 30 minutes... depending on the humidity and how it was applied.

As for your difficulty removing NXT, you must have applied it way to heavy, or it was extremely humid. NXT is very easy to apply and remove.

Leaving a good quality wax on a car for extended periods of time will do no harm. I use a blue coral professional product called revive-it. It is a mixture of two old products they used to carry, and it works like magic. Liquid glass is all we ever used on the 61 vette we used to have, it is some really great stuff. You should research the types of waxes and decide whats best for you from there. There is carnuba, petroleum based, polymer, beeswax, bayberry, woolwax, etc.... And then there are sealants, but thats a whole nother page

I personally like the petroleum based products, as they give a great deep lusterous shine
