discolored valve covers

discolored valve covers

hey guys, got a problem but its not with my truck... its with my 87 corvette convertible.

it only has 6518 miles on it and i had it out today and i started detailing it. well i sprayed degreaser on the warm valve covers and they turned brown any clue as to why or how i can get them clean ?

If it is alluminum, you might try something like this...

I haven't used it myself, but it sounds like it might be the right product for your application. I don't see how it could get worse than brown, but test it on an inconspicuous place first.

the polish didnt work the valve covers are a dull cheap looking cast aluminum...

Try some simple Green. If that doesn't work, try some carb cleaner. I know it sounds like it may be to harsh to use, but I don't think it'll hurt your valve covers. Test out a small area first. And But be sure to polish them afterwards.

If you know anyone that works in an automotive shop you might be able to have them dip it into a tub of like Carborator Cleaner. You can purchased the Carborator Cleaner at automotive stores, it comes in paint buckets, but dipping it into a tub would save you a lot of time and hassle.

My brother took his valve color, it was so bad that EXTRA and Simple Green wouldn't even touch it. He dipped it into that acid at his automotive school and now it looks new again.

Maybe try some Simichrome polish. That used to work great on cast machined aluminum rims.
