? Painting plastic trim

Anyone ever painted the plastic trim around the back window?

I am asking because mine is faded to a gray and it should be black. It's sunbleached with white swirls in it. Armor All and all that other junk out there will not do anything for it.

If anyone has painted theirs... what procedure did you use?

and

How did you get the plastic trim off the truck, the proper way?

Have you tried using tire dressing/cleaner on it? As for getting it off I really do not know, i'm sure someone else will chime in.

Schism9,

I've tried everything, even tire dressing. It just turns in to a shiney gray with white swirls.

I am going to paint it, but I want to see if there are some preferred ways to do it. I definitely don't want to do it with it still on the truck.

The plastic trim must be removed from the interior of the vehicle.

So, in short, you're going to have to remove everything (trim etc) so that you can get to the rear window. Once there, you'll see that it's held in place by several clips which, as I recall, need to be unclipped from the interior.

a couple of things,i believe that the window has to come out to get the trim off.also if you are going to paint use a flex agent in paint so that it doesnt peal or flake off. try useing lacqer thinner on a rag blot or rub lightly it will take off the top couple of layers and get it back to black.then use wd40 /dressing to rejuvenate the plastic. good luck i done this on my 99 a couple of times. Royal... you may want to try something like Trim-a-Shield... there's been some favorable reviews from over at some of the dedicated detailing message boards... Trim-a-Shield

It sounds like it would be easier than painting....

Thanks for the valuable info. I'll look in to which of these will be the best to do later on today.

Thanks again!
