muffler rust
muffler rust
I just noticed this weekend, that I have a fair amount of rust on the muffler of my '03. I've barely had it 2 months, and it's rusting already? What's up with that? Yes, they salt the roads around here, but I've been fairly vigilant about keeping the undercarriage rinsed off. Is this normal?
SLCScrew:
I am the same as you about keeping my undercarriage clean especially with the salt on the road. My truck has undercoating so most everything is protected. However you can't put undercoating on the muffler since it would just burn off. I would say it is normal, mine has it, but looks like a light surface rust, not like chunks.

I don't see how any rust on an 03 can be 'normal'. Sure, you live in an area where salt/brine use is prevalent however, the truck is less than a friggin' year old!!!!
Take it back to the dealership and demand that it be replaced under warranty.

Thanks guys,
Yeah, I know, I'm a little paranoid. That truck's my baby. However, I just found out last night that my wife is pregnant, so I guess now I have bigger things to be paranoid about. Now I'm really glad I got the SuperCrew.

Hey RockPick what I mean when I say I "think" its normal is you know how the drive shaft has a light coat (I guess you could call it that) of rust, that seems to be normal. The reason I say that is because I have seen it on just about every car/truck I have been under.
So I am just wondering if that same type of surface rust would be normal for muffler? I agree you would think something less then a year old would have any rust but even my truck after a month or two had the surface rust on the drive shaft. It hasn't got any worse still looks the same after 15 months or so.
Just wanted to know your take on it. Oh, and NO I have not tried applying Zaino to the drive shaft or muffler, well not yet... LOL

Funny. Mine also has the drive shaft rust. I agree RP, it seems early to be having rust issues. I guess I'll call the dealer today, and see what they say. I do notice myself looking under trucks lately. I'm sure people think I'm crazy.
One thing, I was just looking at the corosion warranty, and it only covers body rust, and I have none of that. I'm guessing that they're going to tell me that it's normal, and I could have elected to go with the undercoating, which I did not. My other rig had it, and it peeled off in spots. There was rust on every one of those spots.
It's weird, though, the muffler has rust, but the pipes, do not. I'd think they'd be made of the same material, and therefore just as succeptable to rust.

Some stock mufflers have a small drainage hole for the condensation(water) to drain out of. Most all the time the rust will start right around that area. I don't know if your muffler has this. And there is no way for me to check because I got rid of my stock muffler. But this is just a possibility. It should'nt be rusting on an 03' that soon though.
also, just cuz your truck is only a few months old, doesn't mean teh muffler or driveshaft is the same age. It could have been sitting outside the plant for 6 months for all you know, which is a very likely reason it could be rusty.
if you think your muffler is rusty, check out your power steering box
talk about flash rusting! but it wont' really hurt anything, its just surface rust

Well, the main reason that the driveshaft is rusty is because it is regular steel whereas the muffler is made of galvanized metal. Hence, it shouldn't be rusting this soon.
Indeed, the stock mufflers do have a tiny hole in them to allow condensation to escape but, let's face the facts here folks, it's a 2003 model. Nearly brand new. There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for ANY rust on this vehicle.
Catch my drift?
