Undercover Classic Really Scratch Resistant?

I have read a lot of great things about the Undercover classic tonneau cover and I am leaning that way. I have a white truck and really like the way the black plastic looks. For those of you that have one on your truck, have you any issues with scratches?

Also, my experience with black plastic is that it tends to fade over time...any notable issues there?

Thumbs up

Mine's over 2 years old, purchased Oct 2009. I've walked on it many times while cleaning / waxing the truck roof (clean the Undercover off after done walking on it) , I've hauled things like doors on it that were large flat objects, just tied to my tie downs (I have a Flareside) .... absolutely NO scratchesd on it to date.

I don't remove it to haul trash, I just pull it down on the trash can lids as I usually only have two of those tall Rubber Maid blue cans in there. I do keep speed down until I dump the cans and lay them down.
(Note .... I haven't had a problem, but I have seen a buddy have a problem with a crack at front hinge point doing this so I no longer drive it raised)

It's "pebble grained" which m,eans actual contact is on top of the pebbles for the most part, and it is a tough plastic that can be cut of scratched but it ain't so easy to do with minimal care. Sure, throw brake drums on it and it's gonna show cuts.

No fading either, looks as good as new. Once every 6-8 months or so, I maybe lightly coat it with something like ICE or Super 303 or any cheap protectant for the "Gloss" look. Ive seen them on other trucks, ain't seen a faded one yet.

Before I bought mine, the Leonard's dealer and his helper where I bought it got up on the helper's truck they had there with a UC on it and did jumping jacks and stuff, it was nice and shiney black exceopt where they had been doing the jumping and I thought it was scuffed at first. A wet cloth wiped the dirt off and it looked fine.

I've had mine for eight years now and these things are very tough. A coating of armor all every once in a while and it still looks awesome

No scratches or fading on mine yet. I just wash it with regular car wash soap. I've never had to put anything on it to gloss it up. Its great being able to stand on it to wash the roof.

After 6 years mine didnt fade. I only had one scratch and that was from pushing a 1/2 inch of ice off the cover. The scratch wasnt even that noticeable and it was black still. Im on my second cover now, got the SE model for my 2011 FX4.

Thanks for all the input. I found a guy on Craigslist that has one. I am hoping to go check it out this weekend. Otherwise it looks like $750 new is about the best I can find.

I just bought one locally for my '05 SCrew and I really like it. Like any plastic, they can be damaged, but they appear to be much more durable than soft covers, fiberglass and metal. I was going to get a soft tri-fold model, but these are much more water resistant, longer lasting and more secure.

I paid $760 and installation was free. I looked online, and they can be found much cheaper, but shipping eats up any savings, plus you have to install it yourself. Installation doesn't look that hard, but if it's free, why not?

I'm new to owning pickups, and the prices on some accessories is just plain crazy. $760 for some molded plastic with a handful of hardware bits and two hydraulic shocks? It is what it is I guess.

You are right about trucks...you can spend as much as you are willing with additions. I ended up finding my UC on craigslist and absolutely love it. I am now thinking about fabing a way to use my power locks to lock and unlock it when I run wires for the tailgate lock. If I ever get it working I will post some pics.

At the time, I did not like the quality or fit/finish of any of the bed covers...even the quality of the hinges/latches was terrible....so I made my own.

Undercover Classic will scratch if you allow abrasive stuff to rub against it. I had mine off my 2005 Chevy and leaning against a wall but standing on a board to protect the edge from the concrete. A worker dragged it off the board and onto concrete to get at the space behind it. Guess what? Scratched! ArmorAll mostly hid it until I traded the truck in for a 2012 FX2 last week.

Otherwise, I had zero scratching issues.
