BakFlip HD Quesitons
BakFlip HD Quesitons
I have read alot of the posts on the Bakflips and read their website and am interested in the HD Model but have a couple of questions.
Can anyone give me a status update on their experience with the HD version, how is it holding up, any leakage, seal problems, etc?
Do you think buying from Ford (thicker hinge material) is worth the extra money?
When mounting on a F150 do you have to drill for the drain hoses?
The website video states that you can open the lid part way and haul items, but i did not see any way to secure the lid down when it is opened part way, only when it is fully opened. Can you actually secure the lid in a half open configuration so the wind doesn't catch it and try to shut it?
Anybody know of any deals or coupon codes?
Thank You for any info you can provide.

I never compared to the Ford OEM version, so I can't speak for that one. I find the 'hinges' plenty sturdy. I'm about 18 months in on it, and so far no complaints whatsoever. I've had 'soft' covers before, and I don't know if I could got back now.
I didn't put the rain hoses in. Basically I stuffed some cloth in the downspouts, and then wrapped them in plastic bags to seal them off. I get a very little overspill leaking into the bed, but it's very minor, even after a heavy rain.
As for securing it, I haven't run with one or two panels open, however there are D rings at the cab end of the cover, both inside and out, so you should be able to lash something between them to prevent the cover from flipping shut.
I had a guy cut me a pretty good deal on them when I bought it a couple of years ago. I am not sure if he is even around any more, but if you are serious PM me and I'll send you his info.

Each section has D rings on the under side to tie to D rings on top of cover by the cab. If you use a bungee cord the hook could scratch the finish. A small size rope in an “N” shape works the best to tie it open.
Hinges depends on how much you are going to open and close. My sons top “G2” is 3 years old no problems and the hinges are fine, also no water. My “F1” top is a year old the hinges are like new, but the top faded. Bak flip is replacing it to find out why this top faded at no charge. They want to send it to lab and have it tested. I took the HD as a replacement and they agreed to include a BAK Box for the difference in cost between the “F1” and the “HD”.
The Drain hose your bed should have a plastic plug by the cab. I drilled a hole in the plastic plug. If I ever removed the top I could buy the plastic plugs from ford dealer.

I'm 15 months into my 2nd BakFlip and agree with other posters on the D rings for tie downs. I've used bungees that have rubber coated hooks rather than the typical black metal ones and thus no scratches. As for drilling for drain holes, it's not necessary. Search other threads here and you'll find photos of how to use a simple piece of pvc to route the drain hoses down the stake bed holes. BakFlip will even provide the plastic pieces for free if you ask.
OK - it's late and I'm not busy so here's the link with pics.
