Help me choose a cap!

Ok so I am at the point where I have decided that I want to cap the FX. I have never had a bedcap before and don't really know how to go about choosing one. There are so many out there that I am asking for a little guidance. What did you all take into account for when picking the right cap for YOU. I do know I like the LEER 100R, because I like the fact that it has windoors as opposed to a single tilt out glass, but thats just one example. As always pics help especially from the '09 and up crowd but any gen is welcome as well. I want it to be watertight too (I figure most already are). The truck is a 2009 Black FX4 SCAB.

The first thing to take into consideration is functionality.
  • What are you going to haul under it?
This will give you an idea of how tall you need it. If you plan to fit an ATV in there, you will want a high-rise, if you only put groceries and luggage back there, you don't really need a high rise. Personally, I have a high rise but that's just what I found cheap.
  • What do you plan to do with the truck while it is installed?
This will dictate whether you need windoors, a high rise, a full sized hatch lift gate, a utility cap with built-in toolboxes, etc.
  • Appearance
You are the only one to whom this matters. It's your truck, get something you can stand to look at for a few years.

I do not want nor need a high rise. I wont be putting an ATV back there. It'll just be for keeping things dry that do not belong in the back seat, and the occasional place to sleep in a pinch. Also a place for the dogs to ride. So far I am liking the 100R and the Z series.

I have the Z-series and love it! Especially like the sliding/fold in front window that makes cleaning the glass on the cab of the truck easy. Mine has the 80/20 split windows on the side, with the back 20% with crank out window for ventilation. I also like the lock/release mechanism on the Z-series better than the Century cap I had on my last F-150. It is all up to you as you have to be happy with it, both are nice caps.

I had a cap on my last truck (had it for 4 years) and I thought it was great, it was a basic Action Cap with no sliding windows on the side. The only use for sliding side windows that I could think of would be for dogs to poke their head out. I don't have a cap on my new truck (09 F150), but if I was to buy one I wouldn't go with a Hi Rise, I think they look terrible, but I also wouldn't go with a flush one either (could barely jam my hockey gear in when I opened the back window of my old cap). Most of the companies make a cap that is in between the 2...like the LEER 180, just give you a little more room, little more viz looking in your rear view and still looks good.

And if your truck is pearl white, A.R.E. charges an extra fee for that color, Leer does not.

Thanks for all the replies. The reason for the windoors is because of the dogs and for truckbed camping. What I'll probably do is go to some local places and look at some in person to get a better idea.

Stay away from Raider and Century. They're the the same, just different stickers, and they're junk.

I had an ARE Z series and loved it. They have different options for the windows. Mine had the wind windows on the side and a tilt out/slider in the front. The thing I liked the best about it was they wired it into my keyless entry so the latch actually locked when I pushed the lock button on my keyfob.

I have the Leer 100RCC with solid side doors and tool boxes behind those doors. I'm very happy with it. Since you will be hauling hounds, you will probably want to skip on the solid side doors and tool boxes. Check out my sig photo.

I went to a local place and asked what the 100R with the slider front and windoors would run and was quoted $1450.00. Does that sound about right?

Another vote here for the Z-series! I love mine. If your truck was older you might be able to find a used one on craigslist or ebay. I don't know about pricing on the leer but the 1450 sounds about right for the Z. Also, check the hinges on the rear glass. I heard they were plastic on the older leers'. Good luck with your choice.
