Retractable Tonneau VS Flip Up

I was wondering what everyone's opinion is on these 2 different tonneau covers. I'm looking for security and weather proofing. If anyone has either one of these types can you let me know how well it keeps the rain out, and what type you have. I've been looking at the BAK, and RollnLock.
Thanks for any help.

I've owned both. I can tell you that the retractable covers tend to leak a little more, mainly near the tailgate. I had a RollnLock once and it did leak near the gate, and it had a vinyl top that really faded bad after only 2 years of use, and it rattled alot too. I wouldn't recommend them.

The flip covers I've owned have been the Advance folding cover and now the Bakflip HD. The Advance cover worked good but it had exposed latches and keyholes. The front and rear latch levers extended through the weatherstripping seal leaving a gap which allowed water to get in the bed.

The Bakflip does not have any exposed latches or keyholes. It also has drainage rails for collecting the water. It has been working out great and there's no water leaks at all, except I once did notice minor drips along the front bed wall, but some additional weatherstripping along the top of the front bed wall fixed that. BAK also makes a retractable cover and I"m guessing it's a great product too but I don't have any personal experience with it. If you have any more questions or want to know where to get BAK products at a great price, just email me directly.

Cool, thanks. Very helpful information. I think I'm going to go with the bakflip HD. I was thinking the BakRol, but figured in the winter time it would freeze and not open, and with the bakflip, I'm guessing it should still flip in the winter.

I see that Bak has a F1 Bakflip now. It looks like it's fiberglass and holds more weight. I wonder if that is a better option then the HD?

yeah it would be better. It will also be cooler to the touch in summer and the fiberglass polymer also helps to prevent dents (from hail, etc.)

Sweet thanks for the info. I think I'm going to go with the F1. Are they easy to install, because there was a dealer I was going to go to and purchase a HD installed for 999, I think I can get the F1 for 899.99, but I'd have to install it myself.

Actually, the F1 has an outer FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) panel and an aluminum inner panel. FRP is not really the same as....say a fiberglass tonneau cover. FRP is actually much more dense and stronger. FRP is often used in commercial construction. You can go to Home Depot or Lowes and find sheets of it if you want to see what it's like.

I'm not a big fan of Bak products. Seems like many have problems with the seals after one year or so. Of course the F1 has not been out a year yet.

But the HD has been out for awhile now and I haven't read about any HD problems, lots of us 09-10 owners have one. My HD is almost a year old now and no problems. Sure the early G2 covers had issues but BAK did acknowledge it and seemed to address the problem. The new F1 seems like the best one yet made by them.

I went with the F1, just purchased it. Got a great deal from autoanything.com. Thanks steve for all your helpful information. Can't wait to get it. I could've got the fold-a-cover a lot cheaper, but for the convenience of being able to use the full bed, plus the way the bak covers lock is why I went with it. Thanks again to all who commented and gave some helpful information.
