Got lucky but need some Tonneau help!

I picked up a Southland hard tonneau cover for only $200 painted and hardly used. I mean perfect condition...no nicks or scratches. They guy was moving and had no need for it !

Now for my question...I got most of the hardware (minus a nut or two) but I didn't get any install instructions. After two too many drill holes I was able to ge the measurement right. My question is this. When open it's perfect, but when closed I noticed that the struts didn't compress all the way. Are they suppose to? Other than that it works just fine...I was just curious.

If the struts arent closed all the way, that tells me that if you had tinkered some more, they would close all the way and the cover would lift higher. If it works fine, then dont sweat it! Wish I could get a deal like that.
