Angry Replace Broken Gas Cover

I was putting some good ol $4.00/gal. gas last night and when I was done. I went to close the lid and I heard a snap and then i felt something fall to the ground but I could find it. Now the darn thing is flapping in the wind and wont stay closed. Has anyone had this happen to them ? What need to be replaced ?

First of all Thanks to WarrenWS6 [B]Here is my attempt to add this little piece of knowledge. This took a total of 5-10 minutes from start to finish. Everything was done from the gas lid opening. No tire removed, no tubing, just the lid and the (3) 7mm screws..

Part #

Here is the old piece with the broken tab

Here is what it supposed to look like

Here is what it looks like with the whole piece off..

This is what I used to remove the gas cap.

I used a rag to make sure the small 7mm screws wouldnt accidently fall in.

And here is the final product..

This happened to mine on the way home from buying it on the highway so I wasn't able to get the piece back, but I think it was a plastic clip or something. I just went ahead and bought a chrome locking gas cap and installed it in about 5 minutes. Looks great and no one can mess with the gas, especially with it being $4.00/gal.

Good rightup, nice to know what actually broke. I actually never "fixed" the broken part on mine, but its held shut by the locking part of the new fuel door. I also liked the extra chrome on there because all of the accents on my truck are chrome and not PTM.

I have a black billet one installed on mine that locks. Better peace of mind Easy to intall and just an additional key to add to the key ring.

You would need to replace the part thru Ford...about $60 more than likely. Just buy an aftermarket one. www.autoanything.com sells them for cheap with no tax and free shipping

Yep I had the same problem and it was embarrassing. Shortly after that I twisted the cap to lock on the filler pipe and the cap broke. Bought another from Tasca. As long as its not the fuel pump I am fine with replacing the little nitty gritty parts

Like 05blackFX4 said, go with autoanything if you decide to order a billet cap. I have ordered multiple things from them with free shipping and it was fast. Plus their prices are cheap and you get a 15% discount off of the price listed.

"the cap broke"

That may be the answer to why someone or thing stole my gas cap. the cap and its tail were missing with no damage. A locking cap at NAPA $19+, at least it won't be an easy job to steal this cap.

Mine recently broke on my '09 Platinum/ They fixed it under warranty. It's quite a common problem and I think there might even be a service bulletin on it.
