When I got my truck a few months ago.. I noticed this:
Rekon I could fix it back? I wonder why they would have taken the buttons out. There is plastic under the cover & you can see the molded holes where button were...
Wonder what all parts I'd need to fix it back, and how does the visor come apart?
I tested the unit before I installed it by just hooking it directly to my battery and programming the garage door. After the install it still held the code and I only had to program my gate so I assume losing power is not an issue. Also I have had other cars with homelink and never had to reprogram after replacing the battery.
this might be a stupid question but how do you program it??
I am not 100% sure from that pic but it looks like the module may be there and you are just missing the button cover.
Thanks. Thats what I was thinking. It looks almost as if you can see the metal contacts up in there... Now I just need to find someone who has a part out truck that will ship me the buttons and cover lol

It appears to have the extra buttons for recording and playing a voice message. Just make sure you get the right cover for it. Also if you want to test it to see if it works you could just use a small screwdriver or something to press the buttons with.
Has anyone found another location to install the Homelink transmitter? I have a 2007 FX4, and I don't have the plastic console surround around my map lights. I've thought about installing it in the panel under the steering column, but I'm not sure that it'll transmit far enough from under there? Anybody come up with another factory-look location?
Watched the instructions on the homelink site (Thanks pa_wolf!) And used a pin to reset and set mine last night, and............................... IT WORKED. Nice!!! So All I need to do is find some buttons, and a cover for the thing. For Cheap. haha!

You could always just buy one and try it in several locations before permanently mounting. I don't know how being in the dash would effect the signal if at all?

Nice! Worst case you have to buy the whole module for the cover but check salvage yards and maybe you can find just the cover.
I had no intentions of ever doing this mod but after reading and seeing this post, I did it. I bought a homelink unit off ebay for $30 shipped that looks exactly like the one the OP has and I installed in the same place he did. Like the OP stated, the plastic on the overhead console is too thick for the trim piece to snap into the module. I chose to sand/grind down the back side of the console, carefully mind you, with an air tool, rather than open up the module and chisel out the area where the trim tabs snap in. I don't know what vehicle the module I bought came from but it had a mounting tab with a hole in it that matched up perfectly to a screw/hole that secures the trim piece between my two map lights. So I was able to secure the rear most end of the module with the factory srecew/hole, drill out 4 holes, three for the buttons and one for the indicator light, sand down the back of the overhead console and it fit great. I then had no need to cut out the whole area using the dot to dot method that the OP detailed. And, as the OP shows, it looks factory, is very secure and works great.
Very nice write-up. I was able to do the modification part last night in about 30 minutes. I obtained a used Homelink module from eBay for less than $20, used a drill and sabre saw to make the cut-out in my overhead console. After work today, I will tap into the map light circuit for hot and ground and then program the Homelink. Easy job, just measure twice and cut once.
I added both factory lighted mirror visors and the driver's side also has the homelink.
My truck is a 2007 XL heavy duty F150. I wired them together with factory connectors so I could remove if needed. I ran the wires inside and across the front of the headliner and then down the passenger side A pillar to the number 4 mini fuse. I used a #10 mini fuse connector with a positive lead off the side from Pep boys. This gives constant power without tapping into any wires making it all appear like it came factory. I am sure you could find another fuse spot to tap into to find non constant power if thats what you need. My homelink works my gates at 40 yards away so they are open by the time I get there.

I know this is an ancient thread, but I just added homelink to my overhead console today in my 2006 XLT Supercrew. I don't have a sunroof, so I used the sunroof switch panel instead. I used a homelink module out of a 2001 Chrysler visor I got at the pick-n-pull for $8.
I didn't take many pictures, but it pretty much goes in the same way OP did his. The little filler plate comes out after removing the map light. Both are held with torx screws. I had to break all the tabs off of the homelink module to get it to fit, and a few tabs that appeared to be useless in the overhead console. The filler plate is way too thick, I spent a good 10-15 minutes with a dremel type tool thinning down the entirety of space the module occupies, being careful not to ding up the outside of the plate.
I also found that the forward most terminal on the dome light is 12V+ all the time, and the second contact is ground. I don't know what the gold traces are coated with, but they take solder very well. I soldered my connections to the dome light assembly so there would be nothing to fight or cut if I need to remove the console again.
