Good grief! They are the same, one is black, the other brown. Kind of like different colors of shoes. You know which one you have on when you look at them.

The left is considered a standard one piece design....traditional style
Can that new plug be used in our older 5.4's, or was there a new head design in 08?

Just the way the spark plug holes are machined to accept the traditional spark plug design.....all the other components remain the same....

No more heat shield pocket...threads all the way...

Right, but the new plug design will not thread into the old head design. As far as I know, if you had to replace heads, you could use the new head on a 2004-2007 engine.

Correct....
The new plug also sits deeper in the plug hole and requires a different smaller size socket....

Nope...their cure is nickel anti sieze on the shank...not to bad of a way to keep carbon building up on the heat shield....if you have the lisle tool keep it for just in case...

IMO....use Motorcraft plugs....a lot better results...less headaches...

88,

What is the recommended Motorcraft plug? SP507,sp515? Is that SP462 plug in your picture above used in the 5.4? It looks like the basket hoop is longer and less of the electrode shield is actually in the combustion chamber.
