Under Vehicle Lights
Looks great! Our local Ford dealer here quoted me over $ 100.00 per side so I didn't even pay enough attention to remember the price. May look for other lights like some of you did. Thanks for the help. Do the rst of you guys lights look simular when lite up? Or are the Ford lights better?

Mine aren't nearly that bright. Those are to bright for me, or maybe it's just the picture.
For the Ford oval hitch plug, I had one of those. Be careful, the one I had only had 2 wires attaching it to the trailer wiring harness. With only 2 wires it would blink with the turn signals. Most quality 3rd brake light hitche lights will have 3 wires and some ciruitry to properly light up with the 3rd brake lights.
The wiring for the 4 pin wiring harness is something like this:
ground / pkg lights / left signal&brake / right signal&brake
You can see how the 2 wire set would blink with only 2 wires attached.
I had wired mine up to turn on with the parking lights. While this looked nice, it ended up melting the plastic and burning out the bulb.
I went to Trak Auto and checked on the lights I used. They are Blazer Utility Lights, no part number. Must be really an off brand, I couldn't even find them on the web! If you decide you want more light output like the Ford factory lights. I would just use inexpensive 35 or 55 watt foglights and add a relay.

The hitch plug I was looking for is not lighted just red color instead of the blue. Didn't sell well so they discontinued it. But I have a red truck and plan to change the other emblems to red so thought it might look nice to match.
On the light wiring I don't know too much. What is a relay? Like an inline fuse box? Or fuse? Or is this a seperate circut from the fuse box etc? Thanks for the help.

It's just the picture that makes it look that bright , with everything around the truck dark the camara only picks up the bright light ... in person it's perfect ... also that's 2 sets of lights , 1 light under each door . I've even wondered what it would look like with one more set , 1 light under the front bumper and 1 under the rear bumper ... but I want other things first .

Thanks both of you. That really gives a person some idea of what is involved and the results. I think that the camera does probably make the light look brighter than it really is in person as the cab lights look really bright also. Brighter than I would say mine really are. So we have approximately 25 watt lights vs. really small wattage lights and both work good. Thanks again. Also thanks for the sill shot showing the wiring. Thant will come in handy.
This is one of the most obscure mods I have ever seen, but it makes so much sense to do!! I don't have much for any electrical experience, but if someone could please spell out step for step how to tap into the correct wires, I would love to try to do this myself. I guess my questions are:
Any low wattage light assembly and bulbs are OK?
What wires would I strip to use, and do I need to do this on both sides of the truck, or can I tap into the same wire for two lights?
Anything else? Thanks for your hints, Now I know what my next project is, and it shouldn't cost an arm and a leg. Then I will have to figure out how to do this on my wife's car.

Most of the info you need is already posted here.
If you look under the truck, near the doors, you will see many holes in the frame to use as mounting points for lights. Any of these will do. I was lucky in that I have step bars. I was able to just mount the lights using the existing bolts.

They will show you where to run the wire into the cab. It is the same on both sides.

All of this can be done with the key out of the ignition, since the lights are on when the dorrs are open.
Once the light is mounted under the truck, and the wire in run into the cab. Remove the bed light/3rd brake light cover. Look at the wire going to the bed light and see what color scheme it is. Now go back to the door sill area and check the bundle of wires. You should find the same wire there. Use the tap splice and "tap in". If you get the wrong wire, just tape it up with electrical tape and try again.
As I said earlier in these posts, I cannot remember if the wire on the passenger side is the same color scheme as the drivers side. But I believe it is.
If you find that the wire you ran goes near any sharp metal edges, add some electrical tape to those areas on the wire and on the metal edge.
So, with this all said. Go out to your truck. Look under it and find a place to mount the lights. Remove the door sill (push it forward, then lift up), look around at the holes for the wire to go through. Look at the bundle of wires and try to find the right one. If you come up with any questions, just let us know. This is a very easy mod, even with zero electrical skills.

You have tube steps which allows the light to come up and around. I have Lund running boards which will block the light from comming up. I just wonder if I should try to find a light to mount out under the running board itself to get the light out. Or do you guys that have them think that back on the frame if good enough? Thanks.
The light shines on the ground in a 2 or 3 foot area where you will be standing as you get into the truck . It doesn't shine on my tube steps at all except for the reflection in the chrome. The bars are backlit where as you wont get that affect with running boards , but you should get enough light from inside the cab to see the running boards ... unless you have the running boards from the Expy they have built in lights for the step (not the ground)
I have running boards from Lund without any lights so this would be a good addition. I hate to sound dumb but in looking at the door sill trim pieces (plastic) how are those held on? The ones that hold down the edge of the carpet. I hate to just pull and maybe break something. Is there clips or? Thanks.
i believe you push foward then pull up ... but you may want to post that question in another thread , people tend to look at new posts more than reading through an old post that they are not intrested in.
