Removing Blue Oval From Grill

I have a 97 XLT and want to remove the Ford Blue Oval from the center of the grill. I am trying to create my own design without tearing out the old grill.
I can feel the posts behind the Blue Oval. Are these threads or just slide on clips holding the Blue Oval?

Two little nuts hold that emblem on. There small, can't remember the size. 1/4 drive with a small extension. Takes a minute to get them off. Take your shroud cover off an you can your hand down in there.

The nuts holding the oval in the grill are the cheap stamped type of nut. Should come off easy with a standard depth, metric socket, don't remember the size. I do remember reversing the nuts to reattach the oval to my Stull grill. You'll understand when you see the nuts.

Since I have the XLT (not the egg crate grill) I was tempted to take my Sawzall and cut out the center section of the grill.
I plan to cover that part up with my home made piece anyway.
