bmackhulrs - I removed the wheels and used index cards around the outside lip of the wheel. You don't have to use index cards, but it's just a cleaner way to do it IMO. I would not spray them while on the truck. You don't want it getting on your brakes. Taking your time is important. 3 to 4 coats allowing it to dry at least for 20-30 minutes in between coats. Make sure you have plenty of day light......

animated_zombie - man, i wish it was my idea..i'd be roll'n in the dough...lol...I can't take credit for it though...i heard about plastidip a while back and to be honest, i was a little hesitant to try it. nobody i know tried it on their wheels....finally i just said f'it. knocked out my emblems and wheels over a weekend. btw - these emblems on my 2011 are a PITA to get off. damn studs...

 

I did the Wheels and Bumpers on my F-250 a few months ago. I don't drive it much, but so far it's held up to everything including a 700 miles road trip and dragging through mud.

The hardest part of the whole project was pulling the bumpers and wheels off a truck with less than 100 miles on it to paint them. I did it because I didn't want any chrome but had to order it that way to get cruise control on an XL.

It has been through one car wash since I bought it. It was one of the washes that uses the rotating brushes and there's no damage. I also sprayed it with a 3000 psi pressure washer cleaning it up after I sunk it in mud and didn't do any damage to the wheels or bumpers.

The only places I'm going to have to touch up so far are around my fog lights where I peeled a little off while installing the lights. The other spot is above my passenger side tow hook where the D-Ring attached to a tow strap dug in a little bit. After washing it off though there was no noticeable mark from a few feet away.

I was convinced to give the bumpers and wheels a try after watching videos on Youtube from the guys over at DipYourCar.com. They use a spray gun usually, but show how to do it with the rattle cans as well which is what I did.

 

Is this just another name/version of the Hydro-dipping they use on guns and what not? Looks good BTW.

 

I definitely think you should leave the steps chrome and the caps. They really do make it unique and contrast each other nicely. You've got a gorgeous truck. Now just tint those windows and call it a day!

 

There's actually no "Dipping" involved. The product was originally sold in cans and designed to be used for coating the handles of tools to provide a non slip grip surface. Then the Automotive community got ahold of it and it's taken off. They sell it in a standard spray paint can and you can just spray it on like paint. The reason it's better than paint is that it's more durable and if you change your mind on the way it looks you can simply peel it off.

I just Plasti-Dipped mine this past weekend. I loved how they turned out..

I was wondering though...is there a Clear Coat or Something I can put on to shine them up a bit and protect them??

 

Looks great. I am now running the center cap on my rustoleum truck bed coated wheels. The wheel need to be touched up though.

 

Reminds me of my truck leave the caps as is.

 

PD makes a "glossifier" that you can add to the wheels that is like a clear coat. You can spray normal clear on it too, but the dip won't peel off as well. It still comes off fine, but it's brittle and chips rather than peels.

 

Bryguy1822, I thought doing to my truck cause I just a pearl white 07 Lariat. My only concern is a buddy of mine did this to his rims on his TrailBlazer SS and it keeps chipping off, I think it may have something to do also with the fact he has really low profile tires on it and probably the Florida heat doesn't help. Anyways, I'll be interested to see how these hold up down the road.

 

Guess I have been living under a rock, never heard of plasti dip till I seen this. I have a lot of ideas for this stuff. Hope it works as well as everyone says.

my wifes volvo's wheels have been dipped for a year now no problems, the brake dust was ruining the wheels so i had to coat them w/something

 

I've used the product many times on stuff around the house, and several of my treestand foot rests, etc. The problem I have is that after a couple months it gets very faded and dull looking, turns a dull dark gray. I wouldn't use it on my truck.
