Painting over chrome...DONE
yup, i pulled em all off and did everything myself. i think the fear of screwing up is what made it all come out so nice. cause i didn't have the cash to get all of it painted, so i knew i didn't have the cash to replace parts. but once you get going on a project, its all good. Go for it!
Came out real good from the pictures. Ine else atempts this I'd use an adhesive promoter and dupli color primer, paint and clear.
In the case of how this truck is set up painted bumpers wil go much better. When you have black wheels and door handles if looks bad having chrome bumpers. It looks much cleaner when you do all painted and black or all painted and chrome. IMO black wheels where made for a white or silver truck.

Yep, all the process is the same. I didn't use a self etching primer on the mirrors or handles though, cause it's mainly for bare metals. So just a normal primer will work. The door handles aren't that bad, take the entire interior panel off. Two bolts from inside the door, an two kinda on the outside door jam. The side where the handle is, under these two little black rubber pieces. Then it pops out an you just gotta work it off the rod that moves the latch. Just be careful with all the little plastic pieces, they break kinda easy.
Take the bumper to a chrome shop, who should, for free, (did mine) strip the chrome off. A nickle finish will be left. Then just sand and paint. The nickle is easy to make a finish, fit for paint, by sanding and priming. The chrome shop should strip off the chrome for free, due to the fact they get to keep the chromium from the bumper. I have done this with four bumpers.
Looks good, but I've been battling my painted chrome grille for quite a while. I even had it professionally painted and still had a couple of chips after the heavy road salting. I'm thinking that you are going to be constantly touching it up.
