Lowering overall step-up height of '97 F-150

I have a 1997 F-150 4x4 Ext. Cab with running boards and 16" wheels. My wife is beginning to complain that the height to step up into the cab is bothersome. I've seen tires that look like they are about 2/3rd the height of a normal tire (Michelin) - are these called 'low profile' tires?

I'm wondering is a lower profile tire will actually make the running board lower to the ground so as to make the height of the distance she needs to step up any less. She wants a new vehicle (Subaru Outback) while I think the '97 is in excellent condition and still has many years life. Not a scratch, spray in liner from month one, always Motorcraft oil and filters.

I would spring for a new set of tires if they lowered the truck and made it easier for her to get in the cab.

Thanks
Robert
