f150 towing mirrors ?
The thing is the puddle and the signal lights all worked when I plugged the mirrors in. No re-pinning involved. The only thing I don't have is the heater button for the mirrors in the cab, but the wiring is there at the plug. My truck has the towing package -tranny cooler and limited slip rear end with 3:73 gears. Hence everything worked when I plugged in the mirrors. I need to know if I need to install a relay at the fuse panel behind the passenger side kick panel or at the main under the hood to get the heat on the mirrors to work when I get the correct control in the dash that has the third button to turn the heat on for the mirrors as I do not have a rear defroster. If I had the rear defroster, the mirror heat circuit is tied in to the rear defroster and there would be no issue.
[QUOTE=AnvilWhacker;4557129]I know that this is a bit of an old thread, but I have to ask. Does any body know if I need a relay to make the mirror heat work. I installed a set of the telescoping tow mirrors on my 07 that have the heat option. The truck originally did not have heated mirrors but the correct wire color is there on both plugs for the heat. If I get the correct control that has the third button for the heat, is there a relay that I will also have to install to make it work?
Thanks in advance for the help.[/QUOTE
From what I am told, the Heated mirrors work in conjuction with your defrosters. When you turn your defrosters on, the heated mirrors come on.
thanks,

Not trying to be an a$$, but my posting states that I do not have a rear window defroster. I plan on changing the existing cabin heater control for the one with the third button to turn on the heating element in the mirror(Ford part # 7L3Z-19980-D). What I am trying to find out is if I need to installl a relay in one of the electrical panels on the truck so when I push the button for mirror heat, it will work. Now, having said that, lets clarify. Are you refering to a rear window defroster or the the windsheild defroster?
Thanks.
Thanks.

To activate the heated mirrors, press the rear defrost button located on the climate control panel.
On vehicles not equipped with rear defrost, press the heated mirror control located on the climate control panel.

I would check and make sure you have those. I would bet the new climate control panel will plug right up. I think most of the trucks have the wires and connectors ran for multiple configurations, as it makes production easier.
Hope that helps.
Thanks Rednoved. Appreciate the research. After my above rant, I had an epiphany. (This truck is new to me by 4 months) I thought that, I know how to do this stuff and should be able to figure things out without bothering anybody. I went out to the truck and pulled the owners manual and started looking. Found everything that you posted above. Here's the kicker. Ford put the wiring out to the mirrors, but the fuse panel, behind the passenger kick panel, does not have any connections installed to put a fuse in the #8 slot. To state it another way, the holes are there for the pins of the fuse to go through, but no stinkin' wires connected to the fuse panel. What a brain fart that was. So now the million dollar question(s). Why would they do that, and can I set it up to work without a lot of BS. To have mirror heat is not a "must have". Just a "would be nice", since the mirrors have the option. I suppose one option would be to call the wreckers and see if they have a truck that had heated mirrors, and change out my fuse panel and cabin control. To me there is still no certainty that the heat will work. Somewhere on this website, I found the wiring diagarm for the mirrors, posted by either Tasca Josh or labman1014. Following that diagram, and the map I made of the plugs at the mirrors, I have the correct wire colors for the heat to work. But if Ford didn't hook up the fuse panel, how will it work? Even if I change the fuse panel, to me, still no guarantees.
So, now that I have totally blown a gasket, I will relegate myself to go out to my shop, grab a cold mug from the fridge freezer, and pour off a cold barley base beverage from the tap sticking out of the door.

Any insight, offerings of advice, or plain statements of "You're screwed friend, suck it up and drive it the way it is", will be greatly appreciated.
I have a fuse in #13 and can put a fuse in #114. But without #8 will it work?

If I understand like I think I do. I will just splice into my rear window defroster and they will all work together; correct? Will I need to up my fuse / relay or will it be good to go?
Edited for more information; I do not have any wires in my mirrors but the motor to move the glass. ( just the four of them ). I do have the rear window defrost and will splice into the wire from the back of the climate control. The turn and puddle is easy splice in door seal kick plate area.
Thanks men.

It's one thing to check connectors and panels for the right wires, but it is a PITA to chase down wires in these trucks. They do a very nice job of wrapping and tucking away all of the wires so they wont be seen. I'm not exactly sure where all that wire goes. If you have the wire at the door in the connector from there it should eventually reach the climate control panel, or there should be a connector behind there for it. From there, I would have thought it ended up at the fuse panel, but if you don't have it there, I really don't know. Hopefully some electrical guru will show up and help out. :oMaybe you could tap into the wire you know is there and run your own toggle or switch before you fork over too much money. I'm not sure if you can just tie it into the fuse panel though. There seems to be a couple of fuses related to the heated mirrors, so it might not be as easy as adding power? I've really reached the extent of my knowledge on the subject. I know someone on here did do a fuse panel swap, and I thought it had something to do with the mirrors. It was a while back though.

Not sure what fuse/relay locations are used with rear defroster and heated mirrors on a 2006. When I get back to the house, I'll download a 2006 owners guide and check it out.
At this point it appears to be more work that what it's worth. I like the truck, nicest vehicle I've ever owned. I like the mirrors that I've installed. I've never had heated mirrors, don't have to have them. I put them on because I bought a 2011 Gulfstream Gulf Breeze, 25' TT and didn't want to deal with the goofy slip-on mirrors. Had enough of that, along with the fender mount trailer mirrors.
Just thought since the mirrors had the heating element, I'd see what it would take to get it to work. At some point in time I will re-visit this and if I figure out a way to make it work, like I said, "Without a lot of BS" I will post my findings. I know I can figure it out, I have been maintaining my own vehicles for 35 years. It now comes down to having the time.
Gentlemen, thanks for all the input. It's nice to know that we all can get on these forums and pose our questions, and there will be someone to answer because they fought the good fight and were kind enough to share what they found.

I doubt you will need to change the fuse size, but I would check to make sure the ones you are currently using are the same size as what's listed in the owners guide. Better safe than sorry. You might double check and see if you have any wires going to the fuse panel for that stuff, AnvilWhacker said he didn't. You're situation is a little different though, since you have the rear defroster. The heated mirrors run off the same switch.

I spent the weekend combing over the various auto recyclers and making several calls today only to find out that no one has an intact F-150. Most of them only have pre 03 if anything.
So I ordered the harness connectors (both mirrors and switch), the switch and mirrors. It won't be the first time I've built a harness. Time to dust off the old soldering iron.
I'll take pictures and do a write up when I'm done if anyone else wants to take on this project.
