Question Question about Hella LED tail lights....

With some long awaited play money from the ex-wife(backpay child support!!), I put some new rims on my 05 today, as well as, ordered black headlights, and the Hella LED tail light/third brake light kit.

I have a question about the Hellas though....I have not been able to find out any info about the reverse lights on them. I know that there is a 'tumor', as I've heard it called, where the reverse light is supposed to be, but I haven't found any pics or info about them anywhere. A little too late, I suppose, since I already ordered them, but they are so cool with the glow strips on the bottom of the lenses.

Any info or pics about the reverse lights is appreciated...thanks.

The tumor part is actually the running light part of the housing, not the reverse. The reverse light is a incandescent bulb which is sealed and I'm to chicken to try and cut it open and install a led. It may take you a little time to get use to the tumor part but you will. There pretty sweet, enjoy

Painting the red trim on the housing (didn't like the way it looked)

Night shot with Putco 3rd brake light

I didn't really like the Hella 3rd light so I swapped it out for a full LED 3rd brake light

These are my old ones (one got broke in a small run in with the garage). The black wire is going to the reverse light so there's really no way to get it out without some sort of surgery.

Thanks for the reply and pics, I'm really looking forward to receiving them and putting them on. I really fell in love with the look of them the first time I saw them on the road. You mentioned that the reverse lights are sealed incandescent bulbs, are they pretty much the same as stock in brightness? I wonder how long they are supposed to last...

By the way, I decided on getting a couple of LED bulbs from V-LEDS to replace the regular cargo bulbs on the 3rd brake light...will just have to see how they come out.

I installed the Hella 3rd light on my father-in-laws truck and stuck a couple leds in the cargo lights. Looks good, nice and bright, and most of all he's happy. No cc issues either

So no one "cut" the reverse bulbs out to add in hi output leds? The bulbs are not too bright, IMHO.

As it turns out, it is possible to remove the incandescent reverse bulbs by removing a few screws and taking off the plate behind the LEDs. I'm replacing them with some high output M-SMT LEDS from V-LEDs as soon as I get back home.

Take pictures of the process please. I'm considering doing this.

Those of you that are putting LEDS in your front and rear turn signals like i have done i was using resistors to get the flash rate right. I just found a better way of doing it I found one company that makes an LED flasher relay that just replaces your stock flasher relay and it works great. The site you can find it on is superbrightleds.com just thought i would share

Well, I've already switched them out but I'll see if I can make time tomorrow and take one off again to take some quick pics. It's really not difficult at all, you'll see.

What is the new bulb size? I have some silverstar 3156, but I'm pretty sure they are too big.

I installed some HID WHITE 36 M-SMT BULBS from V-LEDS....you can find them here; http://www.v-leds.com/Exterior-LED/B...-p4835716.html

I had to get some smaller bulbs(921) due to the narrow opening....I didn't try using some 3156's because I didn't think they would fit. While not as bright as a 3156, these LEDS light up bright enough for me. YMMV
