headlight upgrade
I have a new 09 FX-4, and was wondering what would be the best lighting upgrade for my headlights. I like the HIDS, but not sure about wiring ballast and such. I think I'm just interested in replacing bulbs only. Not sure?? Any suggestions. THANKS
If you want HIDs you need the full thing (HID bulbs, ballasts, wiring, etc). The "bulb-only" bulbs you're seeing are nothing more than halogen bulbs with a blue coating. They end up being less bright than stock bulbs...
Don't waste your money on super-duper triple-krypton-zenon-plutonium bulbs with secret "unobtanium" gas......they're all bulbs with a filament and some goofy coating.
If you want better light, you have to change technology, and that's HID. Silverstars, PIAA, etc. are a waste of money if you're looking for a REAL difference. The decent HID kits are as simple to install as "plug this into that", and a +12v and ground source. Order a 5000k kit (most "real" light, no ricer blue) with a relay harness, and just make sure you re-aim your headlights to avoid glare. Get the 35W kit...that's all the light you'll EVER need. The 2009 housings have a nice cut-off, so glare shouldn't be a problem if aimed properly. I've done a few trucks, and can do heads and fogs in a little over an hour.
Some of the earlier housings are sloppy (light management-wise) and are unsuitable for HID, but you're GTG with the '09.
Personally, I use Retro-Solutions kits. Never had a problem, are priced right, ship FAST and you get a cool little aluminum case.
BTW, make sure you do your fogs too. If you do just the heads, you'll be ordering the fogs the next day, believe me.
