painting tips

Well I finally got time to paint my Roush grill. I did it and it looks great, but I dont think it will last without flaking. To my fault I didn't use any adhesive spray ( tried finding bulldog but no one supplied it ) so I just scuffed it with 150 grit, did 4 layers, and it feels good but i chipped one piece in a hidden area with my thumbnail and it stood no chance to it. May be due to the new paint? its only 48hrs old, I would love to install it but I wanna hear if anyone has any other advise to help it last. Is there any? Such as clear coat? Or should I just take it to the paint shop and let them do it? I used Kyrlon fushion gloss by the way.

well since you didnt use adhesion promoter, the best thing you can do now is to add a clear coat. i think krylon makes one called clear enamel. ive used it on several things and its the best clear coat i have found so far.

I'd give it a tad bit more time to dry completely then add another few layers of clear like Buckes said.

yea usually they say 1 day to touch it, and 5 days to full cure the paint. I would do the clear with atleast 12 hours between layers

12 hours between layers oh boy, but if it will hold it better it will be worth the try, 3 layers of clear sounds just right so i'll give it a shot this weekend.

with the clear, if you want a glossy look, 2 light layers and then a third heavy layer will make it shine

ok thanks. If I do 3 light clears that will give a lower gloss with a satin like finish?

well I think I f'd up, i picked it up and it slipped and i tightened my finger grip to catch it and it chipped the paint... yes, just finger tip grip. So this isn't going to last so i'll have the fight time of the install, and just sand it back down to bare and do it the right way.

Just an idea, one that I'm using for my headlights.

You can order the clearbra material from 3M and Husky in bulk sheets. I ordered a 24x36 sheet and am going to cover some areas on the front of the truck to keep them from chipping or scratching.

You could theoretically paint the grill, cover the whole grill with one solid sheet of it and then cut the open areas out with a razor blade and have a completely protected grill that will never chip or flake off over time.

I would still paint it and clear it and give it a good amount of time to dry before doing this, but if my Roush grill ever fades or chips, this is the route I'll definitely be taking.

Good advise. Thats consider able. Thanks. How did you paint yours?

On a side note, I re-scratch it and removed the paint that didn't hold ( only dashes here and there ) and i'm going to re-do it and possibly prime it.

i painted mine back in october , i sanded with 600 grit and did either 4 coats or a can i cant remember lol.

it held up pretty well over the winter , only a few small rock chips from long highway driving

but i used Rustoleum textured paint for plastics , not sure if it makes a difference or not , but it seems more thick than krylons fuison spray.

im going to be re-painting mine next week when i install the lower grill, my plan of attack will be to re-sand with 150 grit, a couple coats of spray and im gunna try and find a matte clear

Well i'm re-doing it all. I sanded and scuffed the paint ( alot of it flaked off, but alot of it also survived and adhered properly ). I got some Krylon grey primer ( Wonderful wally world didn't stock black.. ) and sprayed it down awhile ago, i'm waiting for another 40 minutes to pass so I can lightly sand it down and shoot some paint on it. This time i'm expecting it to come out better, hopefully, I primed it, trying the Fushion Gloss once more, than going to clear it and wet sand with 2000 grit between clear coat drying. If it still never properly adheres, i'll just leave it to the paint shop, I can get a decent deal on getting it painted it but doing this myself is still 1/3 cheaper, and at the moment i'm very cheap

Sounds like a good plan. I'm going to give the Krylon Fushion 1 more chance. I dont understand fully how this gloss fushion came out so flat and greyish looking, but I never primed it, just scuffed with 150 and sprayed away.
