Painting chrome handle covers??

Instead of buying LT handles or sanding down the textured black door handles, has anyone bought the chromed plastic handle covers and sanded them down and painted them??

I know painting over chrome sukz azz, but I think if you prepped it right it might work OK?

Just thought it would be easy to prep and paint off the truck, then just 3M over the black OEM?

Thoughts?

I would just try to scuff and paint them.

Just seen they were plastic, yeah I would just scuff them, a couple coats of adhesion promoter, then whatever you color coat is followed by clear.

I will be attempting to do my stock black door handles and the tops of my mirrors when it warms up. I am curious to see what it will come out like.

I did my fenders and mirror caps with DupliColor, but I want to re-do the mirrors with the automotivetouchup.com paint. Mirrors were easy!

i would love Ptm handles and mirror caps but dont wanna spend the $$ nor the time fiddling taking everything off.

i too was always curious how well the chrome covers hold up painted , and also if you can actually tell if there is a cover on the handle ?

Taking the fenders off wasn't hard but took time for the whole deal. The mirror caps are cake. You could have them off and painted in under an hour.

Any tips on how to take the mirrors apart like that? It seems so much easier than taking the mirror completely off!

I painted those same exact handle covers. Scuff them up with 400 grit, spray adhesion promoter then base and clear

Also did the mirrors the same way but used high build primer to get rid of the texture

I used a high build primer as well. My stuff came out nice and smooth. See my fender thread.

The mirrors are easy:

Push the bottom of the mirror all the way down and look inside to see where the mirror is attached to the motor.
Take a long thin screwdriver and pry the little plastic tab off, the mirror should pop off the motor very easily.
Now there are 4 torx screws golding the front of the mirror on. Remove the screws, you now have the entire front of the mirror shell ready to come off. Pop it off and you are good to go.

Mask, sand, paint and reassemble. It was WAY easier than I thought it would be!

I painted some SS fender flares. Scuff, etching primer, adhesion promoter, paint, color sand then clear. Came out great. Just my 0.02.

those are the ebay covers, left pull part chrome painted the covers and half mirrors. i sanded aand used adhesion promotor. ordered paint from www.automotivetouchup.com it held up well just redoing because with 4yr old red paint didn't match close enough. if you look close enough you can tell they are the covers.

I'm not sure what body shops in your area are charging, but it only cost me $300 to get all my stuff done. I dropped the truck off and they took everything apart then put it back together in 3 days.
