Painting a chrome grille surround

I have the stock Lariat Honeycomb grille with a chrome surround. I was thinking about painting it white like I plan on doing with my mirrors. I was not sure if I needed to strip it down to bare plastic or if I could just scuff it, clean it, primer it and paint and clear it? Or I may just break down and get one off Ebay or something that is already white, but I kind of like doing my own work when possible.

you would have to sand all of the chrome off and maybe some adhesion promoter to stick to the plastic, thats how i painted my chrome badges
