acetone emblems

Is it possible to apply acetone to the emblems on a 97 f150 to remove the black?

Yup, tape the area around it off, get some cotton ***** and q-tips, and nail polish or acetone and go to town. Took me awhile to do that tailgate one with nail polish, but I finally got it done. Looked nice, but it didnt go with my truck so I painted the whole thing black.

I remember reading that the ’97 emblems didn’t workout for some people. It was a while ago, but I think I remember it being the 97’s and prior years that this didn’t work. Save yourself some time and aggravation and search “acetone badges” and read…read…read…
Good Luck

Ohhhh yeah, forgot about that. Some of the early models have the black 'baked' on IIRC. Acetone wont get that off. You could go to your dealer and buy new ones, or get some from a junk yard if your black wont come off. Its a hit and miss deal with the older ones

My truck is a 99, and when I did my emblems I had one that was chrome underneath and one that was still black under the black paint. So some of the black emblems did make it to 99. I had to buy one new one to replace the bad one. Now they look like this.

That is correct, it may take multiple times to get it all off cleanly.

If you do not want the black removed from the triton letters then dont go nuts on the acetone. After that just wash it and wax it and it should have a pretty nice shine.

Sledd, your emblems look sweet, where did you get the 5.4 stickers? I'm gonna need some 4.6 stickers or something cool...any ideas? Maybe 281?

I've done many on the Superduties. Tape the truck off with plastic and mask off around the emblem. Hit it with carburetor cleaner, toothbrush the emblem to loosen the paint, spray off with carburetor cleaner again to clean, wipe with a clean cloth, pull off the masking and plastic. Done. I did all five on my Superduty in about 30 minutes. Three emblems on another Superduty in about 15 minutes. Forget the acetone and q-tips, unless you have all day.

Zaairman, I had them made at a vinyl lettering place. I took an extra emblem in so they knew the size and shape I wanted.
Mine are yellow, with a slight black shadow look.
4.6 would look good, or 281 ci. Many things you can put on there.
Since my truck is black, the yellow looked best. I also have a 5.4 sticker under the hood and one on my rearview mirror to tie them all in.
Hope that helps...

Sled, do you know what font that is? I'm leaning towards 281 in black...

Not sure of the font, I just asked to have be as close as possible as the f150 above it. I have had mine on the truck for like a year and it has worn well.

The 281 would look good in black and would be different than anyone elses.
Maybe 281 with a small gray shadow like the black is on my 5.4.

I have had people pull up beside me and can read their lips as they say 5.4.

I even had one guy, just after I finished waxing, pull up and read the 5.4, then wave at himself in the reflection. Gotta love black when its polished..
