Question Need Bug Deflector Advice

I am looking for a bug deflector for my 1998 F-150 Supercab 4x4.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to preferred brands of deflectors?

PS - I would prefer to install a "no drill" bug shield if at all possible.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Every no-drill I have seen on customer's trucks were falling off when you open the hood. 5 small scew holes under the hood? It's no big deal.

So I should stay away from the "no-drill" items?

Any specific recommendations as far as brands/models? It appears that the Lund products (Interceptor, Trident) are very popular.

The Ford low-profile deflectors look the best I think. I might pop for one of those at some point. I've heard that they are a PITA to intall though.

Your set up is totally different than the one on a 98. The ones for a 98 wrap around the front edge of the hood and are held on by plastic screws into already there holes. I had no problems with mine in 70k miles. The feel a bit loose, but stay on. Can't remember if it required the little plastic buttons to be stuck to the hood to protect it. The ones for the 05 sandwich between the grill and hood except for a clip attached to the hood near the ends of the deflector. That uses protective tape so the paint doesn't get damaged. It is a very sturdy set up and only takes 15 - 20 mins to install. You do not need to remove the grill, just loosen it.

As for the 98, I think Lund's are no drill, and there are others. Lund seems to have the best selection on colors and types.

What are you guys talking about? No drill/drill. I bought one that was called a drill type and all they meant is I needed to drill to screw to the pre-existing holes in the underside of the hood. Are some now requiring you to drill your hood and thread it?

Question for everyone who has one. Took less than eleven months after my repaint and I noticed a very faint line forming from the sun fading everything correctly except that front two inches of hood line. Anyone else getting the fade line. You have to take it off and clean the truck to really notice it.

Have never seen a fade line like that. As far as drill/no drill, no drill means it is mounted using existing holes. You only need simple hand tools to install. Screwdriver, ratchet, etc.

Put a no-drill on my '05 yesterday.

Wrap around style made in Oz. A pain-in-the-**** that could have been prevented with one easy step in the directions. It had a notch in the centerline, the hood has a hole in the CL. All they would have had to say is "...align notch in deflector with center line hole in hood and mark outer snap clips." First attempt was a 1/4 inch off.

Even with having to remove the grill, if I did it again it would take 10 minutes. As it was it took about 45 to do it twice. Frustration factor included. Can't wait to tackle the Peragon tonneau (if I ever get it. 2 weeks and two days...but who's counting?) and the BedRug! (that's been here for almost two weeks)

Good luck on your choice and think practically! LOL

I installed the Lund interceptor deflector about 5 years ago on my truck and have never had it come loose. It took all of 5 minutes to install using christmas tree plugs in the existing holes in the hood. It's still tight with no problems. I would definitely recommend it. An alternative would be to use one of the self-adhesive decal type things that don't project at all.

I have the Lund X-Terminator for my 02 and it looks wonderful - very low profile. Same one would probably work on your truck.

I had a lund--I really don't know what kind it was. I bought it off the shelf from a store in Minnesota called Mill's Fleet Farm.

The bugshield rubbed the top of the grill and caused paint removal on my 2001. I took it off.

Turned in lease, got 2003 FX4. Put bugshield back on. STILL rubbed and caused paint removal. Sold it on ebay.

Turned in 2003 lease and bought 2004 FX4 SCrew.

No bug shield this time.
