Question Shift **** questions.

Well, went hunting for some shift ***** today, and found two. One was a $30 Hurst billet aluminum **** that was threaded, but had several plastic adapters with little hex pressure bolts. It looks like it'll accept the 5/8" shaft, but is only 1 3/4" wide, where the stock one is 2" wide for your plam to rest on. Also, it's kinda "tall", but had a really deep shaft. http://www.mrgasket.com/hurstnew.htm#Custom The other was a cheapo $14 bilet Al. ball that actually looked more quality than the hurst, but wasn't threaded...just had two long plastic shaft adapters and the hex bolts. It was closer to the 2" stock size, and "short" with a deep shaft. My question is, how much of the stock shaft is up inside the stock ****? I need to make up my mind which **** I want, because the ball will drop all teh way down it looks like, but the Hurst can only go down as far as the little plastic adapter is, so the hex screws have something to "bite" into, however it looks like I could slide the whole thing down past the skinnier part of the shaft, onto the fatter part, and use the hex screws straight to the metal, and skip teh plastic all together. Am I making any since? I don't know what to do...I really like the Hurst, but it's kinda narrow like for a car or something, though it's only 1/4" less wide. I'd hate to have to buy em' both, but I could take one back afterwards. Any comments on this? Thanks!!!

BTW, is the shaft knurled, or splined? Is the stock **** damaged in any way with removal? Can it be put back?
