Cool BUG DEFLECTORS

I know that alot of you have bug deflectors on your trucks.I want to know which one you think looks the best on your truck and if it rattles while at "WOT" (need to speed). I'm planning to buy one so all perspectives would be appreciated.

THANKS

Well I just bought one through the Ford dealer (part no. 16C900, cost about $70). But unfortunately it might be a week or more before I get it on. But I will let you know what I think of it after that.

Ocherbeck, www.ocherbeck.com , carries a line called "Prime Design". I got one with a wrap-around/high profile and it works great. I travel to and from ranch property daily, right down the center of BUG highway and it truly propels the bugs away from your window.
I hope this was some help.

I have a Stinger on mine. I bought it because it attached solidly to the underside of the hood and follows the contour of the hood perfectly. I've had no problems at high speed, and it looks great.

I am also looking for a good bug deflector. I would like to know what you have and if you had to drill any holes or use tape.
Thanks DBP

I have a bugflector II on mine. I installed it myself and put it as close to the hood as I could get it and not hit the hood. I didn't drill holes I just used the 3M doubled sided tape that stuff could hold Teflon together..lol It looks real well hugged against hood. i have seen others that stick out quite a bit and I think it looks rather unproper. Oh yes I paid 34.92 for it well Ok my girlfreind did aint she sweet?

My bug deflector is the "Stampede" brand; I used a clear one, so it doesn't look like there is a bug shield from a mile away. It's been on the truck for 11 months now, and I'm quite happy with it; no rubbing of paint, as I've read about some brands in the Message Digest; no hitting the hood @ speed; no causing the mirrors to vibrate. Installation was a snap. There are 4 holes on the leading edge of the underside of the hood [appear to be 1/4" diameter holes]; the bug deflector kit comes w/ plastic screw anchors that pop into these holes, and some smalll screws that go in the anchors. The installation is why I looked around a bit, and bought this particular deflector; I'm not thrilled about drilling holes in a new truck; also, I'm not a big fan of double-stick tape.

I've got the Ford bug shield. I'm also not a fan of drilling holes and putting tape on paint. It mounts up with a clip on each end, that slips over a protective pad the the edge of the hood. The underside is screwed into exisiting holes. No shake, nice profile, far enough away to wash & wax behind. I'm satisfied. I think the cost was around $90 from the dealer, installed. It's warrantied by Ford, too.

I just put a Lund FrontRunner on my 99 F150 and it looks great. I had it painted Deep Wedgewood Blue to match my truck. It's a really low profile bug deflector but it does a surprisingly good job deflecting the bugs and it perfectly matches the contours of the hood. The only negative is that it installs directly to the top of the hood using 3M tape and you really can't wash underneath it.

I got the Stampede deflector from Padgham's Pickup Accessories, which probably doesn't do you a lot of good, unless you're near Miwest City, OK....but I'm sure a lot of other pick-up accessory shops carry 'em too....

I installed a "Prime Design" painted to match the truck. It just screws into existing holes under the lip of the hood. There is plenty of room to wash and wax the hood, but does not stick out so far as to look bad. When I was looking for a bug deflector, I didn't want one that used 3M doubled sided tape to attach it to the hood. Didn't think it would be strong enough. But I just added the FORD factory body side molding to my Flareside and it is installed with the 3M tape. Man that stuff sticks! So with that I think the 3M install would work just fine. My 2 cents.

MattT: on that Lund FrontRunner; does water get behind it?? How about dirt? I've got a catalog with a picture of it and it looks like it's right on the truck! How long have you had it installed? Did you order it painted to match your truck or did you have it painted? And how much $ ??? Thanks

Tina,

I've only had the Lund FrontRunner on my truck for about 5 days so I can't say for sure how much dirt and/or water gets under it. There's one long piece of 3M automotive tape that runs along the entire length of the rear of the bug deflector that attaches to the hood, so I don't think much dirt and/or water would get under it that way. However, it doesn't wrap around under the hood it and attaches to the front of the hood using a few strips of tape, so I suppose that some dirt could come up through the front and the sides. I'm hoping to wash it in the next couple of days...I'll let you know more after I wash it. I had a truck accessories shop order the bug deflector from Lund and the accessories shop painted it...I don't think you can order it painted from Lund. It comes in black, so unlike clear bug deflectors, they have to paint the front side of the bug deflector, not the rear side. The FrontRunner cost me about $50 and they charged me another $40 to have it painted. That sounds like a lot for a bug deflector, but it does look really, really nice...heck, a lot of people have asked me if it came from the factory that way. I've only had my truck for a couple of weeks, but hopefully I'll get a picture of it in the owners' gallery before too long so you can all check it out.

Matt

MattT: Let us know if you have any problems with the paint chipping on the front of the sheild. I had the underside painted on my Deflecta-Shield II about two years ago. Unfortunately, the clear bug shield is starting to yellow - actually it is very yellow. I have tried everything I know to bring back the clear look so that you can see the bright white underneath but to no avial. I had thought about having the top painted but bug shields go through alot of abuse. I just wonder how it will stand up. Keep us posted. Ok.
