Question Expy console questions

Hey all,
I've read the posts about installing the expy consoles into the F150's. They look great and appear to be a better fit than the consoles that came with the trucks. However, I have a couple of question for those that installed them.
1) Did anybody come up with a good idea as to what they did with the "hole" that was in the back of the console originally used for the heater controls?
2) Is the inner compartment the same size as the oem console? I have the JL stealthbox in my console now and would hate to have to lose it. The "box" replaced the guts of the console, so the shell just fit right over it.
Thanks

Here area my answers to your questions:

1) I have not tried to fill the "hole" with anything because I forget that it is there.

2) The inner compartment is a little narrower but not a whole lot. I do not have dimensions for you but I could measure them both if you would like.

I just bought a black piece of ABS plastic, cut it out, drilled some screw holes, and installed it. So now it just looks like a black panel.

I left the hole open temporarily because I want to string some wiring through it. Then I will cover the hole.

I box is smaller than the original. I tried to fit the basket that was in the original and it sits too tall. I can sacrafice the smaller box for better appearance..

Thumbs up

I went to a craft store and bought some gray vinyl that matched the consols color. Then cut a piece of 1/4" plywood a little bigger than the hole.Used spray adhesive to fasten vinyl to wood and hot glued it from the inside.Looks totally factory.

I'm searching for an A/C outlet that will fit the opening. When I find it I will then rig up some type of ductwork for additional Climate Control. Patience has its rewards!

Thanks for all your replys. Did anyone try to put a piece of black plastic in there and put a power outlet there. Wondering how that would look? I'm trying to get it to appear "factory like" because it is an ext cab, and occasionally I'll have people back there. I know it's a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway. Did all the expy consoles have the control vents there or was it an option. I'm wondering if you could just buy a different shell if they didn't. Hey BlueFlareside, it would be great if you could get me those measurements. I'm afraid of buying one onlt to have to lose my stealthbox subwoofer. If that's the case I'd have to forgo the console and leave it as it is. Thanks

The measurements for the Expy console are as follows:

top opening width = 6 3/4"
top opening length = 11 1/2"
depth from bottom to top of opening = 8"
inside max. width = 10"
inside max. length = 12 1/2"

For the F-150 console here is what I measured:
top opening width = 7"
top opening length = 11 1/2"
depth from bottom to top of opening = 9 1/2"
inside max. width = 11 1/2"
inside max. length = 16"

One more idea is to use the bottom of the Expy console as a sub box if it does not fit. Check out this link http://www.f150world.com/expyconsolesub.asp

Hey BlueFlareside,
Thanks for getting me those measurments. From the sound of it I'm not sure the stealthbox will fit, but I'll measure to be sure. It's a good idea about building the subwoofer into the expy console, but I spent a liitle over $300 on the JL and it sounds really good. I'm not sure it's worth giving up for the new console. Thanks again, I appreciate it.

MisterP,

Give Darin a call at LWM at 1-800-259-5842. I am sure he has seats along with consoles from Expeditions.

I love the JL box. I'm not one one for really thumping bass that you hear three blocks away, but wanted to add something to give more fullness to the system. It certainly did that and more. In fact, I'm lucky that my head unit (Alpine) has an adjustment on it for the subwoofer level. This way I can fine tune it for the sound I want. You'll definetly be more than happy with it. I have a 300 watt amp pushing it so it gives more than enough bass. In fact, my wife complains that when I crank it up the seats vibrate. The other nice thing is that it's totally "stealth". The only thing you lose is the center compartment. You still have a storage area, but it's only a couple of inches deep. Still better than losing all the area under the rear seat if you were to put a box under there. Also, I mounted the amp under the "smaller" seat in the back so the main one still folds down. Any questions about it let me know.
