Bug Shields
I myself am not a fan of these bug/rock, hood and fender protectors, but the season for the flyin' beasts is fast approaching. I am curious what devices you're all using to ward-off the impact residue of those flying critters. I have looked at the Lund line, which in my opinion, seem to be the closest to what I'd have in mind. A few years ago Mark III made one for their conversion vans and trucks. The shield was painted to match the vehicle but was more decorative, (although it did protect the front surface of the hood), than functional standing only an few inches up from the hood. I called them to purchase one. Sorry, only sold to subscribing dealerships/OEM's and as a total package only. So, what device/method do you use or plan to use other than elbow grease when washing? Thanks for your replies.
Casper,
As you'll see from my signature, I don't have one yet, but there are a few bug deflectors that you'll find get really good reviews from members of this site. My personal favorite is going to have to be the Lund Trident. It's Lund's top line model and claims to be more rigid and sturdy than their cheaper models. Most of the deflectors (including the Lunds) attach with a few screws fit to the factory holes under your hood. The Lunds have a good rep. for standing enough away from your hood to wash behind without any hassle. No elbow grease on this truck
Going with a matching color painted visor often times gives a more 'finished' look to it, but that's just my 2 cents. If you do go painted, get a CLEAR one and get the back of it painted so the color shows through evenly, but won't crack or get chipped from granite bug strikes.
Depending on quality preference and brand choice, I believe you can get most of the nice deflectors for somewhere between $40-$80. Keep checkin around. I wish I had one.

Casper II:
I just got the Lund Trident and it looks great and installs very easily. It has 6 brackets that hold the shield away from the hood. It does not use the factory holes, it just has screws that anchor the brackets to the underside of the hood, which is not a problem. I got it for $58.45 at carparts.com after I had them notice truckperformance.com had it cheaper and they had to match that price and then give me another 10% off.

I installed the Bugflector II as soon as I got mine. I learned from my Jeep GC I had before it. Big bugs can ruin your paint!
Bugflector II installs easily and on my Expy it fits tight and looks good! ON my Jeep it wasn't as good a fit. I was really pleased with the Expy fit!

I also have the Bugflector II in clear, I painted the back of it the same color as my truck, looks pretty good. If you get this type be sure to put the little clear bumpers on top of the grill surround or the deflector will rub the paint off when the hood is closed.
Bugflector II for me also.

I have the bugflector II also, and what 2000Lariat said is right on the money. It started to rub the paint off the top of my grill surrround. I didn't use the rubber bumpers that they supplied. I went to the local motocross shop and bought 12mil thick clear number plate backgrounds. This is like the same stuff they use to protect your front doors from the latch of the ext cab doors scratching the paint. I cut pieces for the middle and both sides, the only places it was touching. Works great and protects a nice large area.
I also put some large stick on bumpers between the top of the hood and the bugflector to stop it from bending down at highway speeds. Doing this helps keep the air going over the truck instead of slamming directly into your windshield and curling down so you can't use your washers above 55 mph.
