Post Strobe Lights

Just thought I would let you all in on an appearance item I did. I went to pep Boys and bought two strobe lights{12.99 each} They say they are for underbody or interior lights but I put them behind my main billet grill. I put one on either end of the grill on the inside. I wired mine into the headlights but you can wire them into anywhere. They come with an on/off swithch but i opted to bypass that so they come on whenever the headlights are turned on. Some of you 4 wheel guys might say that it is too low rider like but my truck is a four wheel drive and it gives it a nice little touch that most people dont have. Let me know if you do this to your truck and hw it comes out. Next step is to put one behind the bumper grill. Will let everyone know.

well, I thought of the legality of it and decided that even if it is illegal here in arizona they probably wouldn't do anything about it as they usually dont bother with stuff like that. I have lights like that on my 57 chevy too and I have never had a problem. Knock on wood. Will let you know if i get stopped.

Turtle,

Just to make you aware, those strobes are illegal on the street in all 50 states. The strobes are for Law enforcement and emergency vehicles only. You can use them in a parking lot, but if you have them on the street, the fine is basically impersonating an emergency vehicle, which in many states is a felony. Would hate for this to happen. And speking as someone who has been an officer for a few years, it only takes ONE rookie looking for something to do for the night to make yours go really bad.

a lot of people my age hate cops
but they never bother me so i dont really care
but rookies **** me off
they all think they are bad at first and nitpick on little crap
like my brother has certain parts on his mustang that are barely legal and rookies always pull him over saying it is illegal
which it is not
and it always gets thrown out

Is it still illegal if you can not see the actual strobe coming out? What I mean is that you can see blinks of light but you can not see the actual bulb. It just lights up the inside of the grill kind of like if you looked out the window during a lightning storm and didnt see the actual lightining bolt just a flash of light?

As far as I know, all flashing lights, red lights, blue lights, or yellow/amber lights are illegal where I live...which is usually in all 50-states too. They suggest police, fire, rescue, amublance, or tow truck according to state and federal laws. I have a few friends that are law enforcement officers. I was thinking about installing some on my truck in the lights. We have a local raceway that has a street legal pace-car, and it has them. They only come on with switches though. I asked them about putting these on my truck, and they said "Don't let one of us see them!" So, I would rewire them to only come on when you hit a switch or something. That way if you happen to see a cop or something, you can turn them off fast. Just an idea.

Are you crazy they are only legal on emergency vehicles in all 50 states and on some trucks that work in construction zones along the highway for warning traffic of work site hazzards in the zone but more power to you if you can get away with it.

Despite the "legal" issues, they don't last forever. Wiring them to be on with the h-lights will certainly "wear" them out sooner than normal. Maybe that will keep you from getting a citation. They are cool though... have fun!

Pyro no offense or nothing but one day you are probably gonna get caught and they will throw the book at ya. I've been on the wrong side of the DOT before and it ain't fun. He even let me off easy. If it was me Turtle I would put those strobes on a switch. Where I work we have red lights on the tow trucks and we have to have a license to run them. If the DOT catchs you using them when not working (i.e. trying to turn a light or get through traffic, etc.) it is a $5000 fine.

Im with Dave..I too have been in public service for 15 + years, And it seems to me that the younger adults (see, i didnt call ya kids) do bring on a lot themselves. I cannot believe the lack of respect that is out there in the world anymore. There seems to be a lot of "above the law" or "it wont happen to me" attitudes in the world anymore But believe it or not, most laws are for the publics safety for one reason or another, whether you agree with it or not. What would society be like if EVERYONE just decided to do whatever they wanted? Ok, i've rambled and gotten way off the subject.. 99.99% of the Police and Fire people are out there for you and your protection and will do whatever it takes to make sure you have a safe and happy life, even when the public doesnt care much for us.. Funny how it works that way

im sure Dave will agree with me, It sucks to have to call parents at 3am for any reason, but thats yet another subject.

whew.. hope we're off our soap boxes..

They are illegal. VERY ILLEGAl. They carry a minimum $250 fine with them. If I were you I would make it so that you can turn them off and on.

Okay now it's time for a firefighter/EMT to add to this list. Not going to tell you that they are illegal, cause I think it had been said enough here, but add my two cents.

As my name states I am a Chief, a young Chief at that....23, but still a Chief. I have strobes on my truck, two behind the grill, two on a dash light, two in the brake lights, two in the fogs, and two in the corner lights. Now that's a lot of strobage. According to NJ laws....not sure how it is anywhere else anything with more then a certain candle power is illegal. So technically a lot of the stuff that is sold out there is not legal. But since I am a Volunteer I did have to register with the state DOT and get a permit. I have the strobes on a toggle switch.

So speaking from a point of Emergency Services, they are only legal if registered, and can only be used enroute to and emergency.
