Question Adding a billet grille

I own a Work Series f-150 so I don't have a chrome or color keyed grille frame(or whatever it's called). Someone told me that I have to buy a frame that will work for a billet. I have on mine, right now, some plastic junk that I would like to get rid of. The only cool thing about my grille right now is that on the Work Series trucks I think the Logo is bigger than the other models. Anyways do I need to buy a different frame? And if I do, where can I get something like this? Thanks in advance.

Future Mods: FIPK, Superchip, Spray-on Bedliner, Billet Grille

Cool

From what I've heard if you have a work series you need to get the whole surround.

the only thing I can say is take off your grill and see if it has tabs to take out the insert.

Forget about removing the grille to check for clips, it doesn't have them. My stock grille was just like yours, except the surround had chrome painted edges like the pic at the top right of this page. Roger Lemere sells a billet grille for this type of grille right here on this website (or at least he did the last time I checked), but it requires cutting the center portion out with a dremel or something. I decided to replace the entire surround with a factory color-keyed grille and haven't installed a billet in it yet.

Preyhunter,
How much did you pay for the surround? Did it come painted or is it extra? Also where did you get this from?

I paid around $225 for it. A friend of a friend works at a Ford dealership and he was able to get it for me at his cost. It would normally sell for around $280 I think. It came already painted, perfectly matching the factory paint on my truck. There is very little price difference between the painted ones and the chrome ones if I recall correctly. There are some other places that sell the paintable surrounds by themselves, paintable surrounds with billets already installed, and chrome ones with the same options. The shells themselves usually run around $300 from what I've seen. Just pick up a copy of Truckin' magazine and browse the ads to see what I'm talking about. Actually, just go to www.sporttrucking.com , use their search page to enter year and model of truck and search the grilles and billets category to find several combinations at what looks to be a pretty good price.
If you decide to go with the grille that you have and cut out the center, be careful about what billet insert you order. There is one for the painted grilles with the mesh center and another specifically for the chrome surround (physically identical to yours). They must attach differently or something. Good luck with whatever you decide.
