Thumbs down GS-27 WARNING

I just wanted to warn the membership about a product called GS-27. It is marketed as a safe scratch remover and sold by Walmart. DO NOT use this on your truck!!! I used it to try and remove some tree branch scratches and it really screwed up the clearcoat. It left swirl marks and actually sort of melted the clear coat. Now I have to try and figure out a way to fix the clear coat too. I hope everybody can learn from my experience and not make the same mistake I did, cause it's a sickening feeling when you screw up the finish of a brand new $25,000 truck.

Red,
Sorry to hear about your problems with the GS27 product. I've personally not used it & certainly will not, given your demise. However, I have a suggestion you may try. I've got my share of swirls an scratches to deal with. The solution I used was 3M Imperial Hand Glaze. This stuff did really well. It's almost hard to tell where the scratches were. Make sure you follow it with a good wax when you're done. Good Luck.

I used GS27 a few times on my old car, a 92 Toyota Camry that was dark hunter Green. Every imperfection showed on it, just like black. Well I used it on a couple scratches on my black F-150 and it didn't screw up the paint at all. It did hide the scratches pretty good, not like the commercial shows where the guy scratches his hood all up and then fixes it with a quick swipe :-) But it did help alot and didn't do any harm to the clearcoat or paint.

RedRyder, did you used too much maybe?
I scrape the right side of my truck just this past week and flipped after seeing two 24" long scrape mark on it. I used the GS-27 and the darn marks came right off. I quickly applied two coats of Liquid Glass on it and now it seems nothing ever happens. My truck is a 97 and yours a 99, maybe the clearcoat is not fully "cure" or harden enough?
GS-27 is a very strong abrasive.
Sorry to hear about your problem and good luck, man! steve

I used a clean terry cloth towel by hand and used a gentle circular motion, just like the directions said. I was able to get rid of the swirls with some red color magic wax. It took me awhile, but now you can't tell even with the bright sun shineing on it. I'm glad you had good luck with the product, but I pitched my tube straight in the trash.

For scratches in the clearcoat, has anyone other than me ever used clear-coat touch-up (if not, you should-results are fantastic). For scratches down to metal, go to a Ford dealer and get some matched touch-up paint. Clean the wax out of the chip with mineral spirits, and apply the touch-up paint sparingly. If the touched up area is too "high", use some 1500 grit wet sandpaper to bring the high spot back down, then gently use rubbing compound on the spot. If done coorectly, the spot shout be barely noticeable-even on black. And by the way, GS-27 is completely unnecessary.
