Depot headlight owners, tired of the crystal fog?
Anyone who has Depo brand headlights on their truck more than a year and a half knows of this problem. The headlights come with a clear coating, that keeps the headlights from yellowing, etc. After a while this starts to break down, and starts to look kind of foggy, or crystalized. Don't throw them away, unless you just want new headlights that is. I just "fixed" mine yesterday. Took maybe an hour per side since I was stuck doing it by hand. It would go MUCH quicker with a rotary buffer. Anyways, I got a bucket of soapy water, and some 1200 grit sandppaper. I sanded the front surface of the headlight thoroughly, making sure the coating was completely removed. Then you take some rubbing compound in varying grits, and polish them back out again. Pretty simple, just lots of elbow grease if you do it by hand like me. After I was all done, they look new again. For final polishing I used some 3M finish restorer wax. It worked great taking chemical haze off my dash lens once, works on clear(or stock) tail lights and corners, too.
Two hours of my time, and a couple of products I already had in the garage, and voila!! Saved the $130-$160 for a new set.
I don't have any before pics unfortunately, but I can post some afters, if anyone is interested.,,,,98
Make SURE your headlights are cleaned VERY well before beginning the sanding! If while sanding you hear a high pitched buzzing, STOP immediately and wash the headlight and rinse the sandpaper. This is sand stuck under the paper, and will put deep scratches in the headlight.
Also use some type of protection for the surrounding paint or chrome. Painters tape, etc. Good luck!
