[Highlander] In the end there can be only one [/Highlander]

For budget minded persons, there is the Escort 8500:
http://www.escortradar.com

I had both, the 8500 is cheaper but once you go with the V1, you will never go back. Both are obscenely expensive but will pay for themselves with just two avoided tickets. I drive 90+ on Interstates (weather and traffic safely permitting of course) and the V1/8500 together with a CB is as good a Revenuer avoidance equipment as you are going to get.

All the other detectors are just an expensive way to let you know you are about to pay the 'high velocity vehicle' tax.

I roll with the passport 8500. Before i bought mine i did alot of researching because you are dropping alot of money on something and you want it to work for you. All the research said that the 8500 is clearly the best one. The valentine 1 is like 100 more and doesn't perform quite as well as the escort. They pretty much have the same features the only thing that the valentine has that i've really noticed is the arrows telling you exactly where they are. But check out www.radartests.com and that should help you out.

have you personally owned a v1? probably not. then you shouldn't be sitting here saying which is better if you have not tried them both out.

I personally have used both the V1 and the escort 8500 and can say that the v1 out performs the 8500 by far. if that isn't enough you can check back issues of car and driver, they seem to have a radar article once a year and say the same thing every time, buy the v1.

if anything get a k40, but don't stoop to the level of an escort.

btw, if your wondering what i did with my escort? i gave it to my mom. if you want to waste 300, by all means buy an 8500, but if you want to make a worthwhile investment, spend the extra money and get a v1, $50 more gets you a 'remote display' which can make for a very clean installation.

I have the V1 and think its the best radar detector I have ever owned. Very well made, can be upgraded to new technologys when they come along, and I particurly like having the display that tells me where the cop is - ahead, behind or to the side. Also the digital display that tells you how many signals it is picking up is nice. Without it if a cop is sitting in an area that you normally associate with getting a signal, such as by a supermarket, if you don't know there are two signals you might not slow down. Just my opinon though. LOL

Looks like after careful review, the 2 best are the V1(which is down right ugly) and the K40 (which looks great and $100 cheaper). Not much difference in performance and the K40 has a ticket guarantee. Looks like the K40 may get the nod.

don't be cheap.

spend the extra bank and get the v1. lifetime warrenty and lifetime upgrades (meaning if there is some new technology that comes out, or valentine changes something on their production model they will upgrade or replaces yours free of charge). not to mention the direction indicators... it's well worth it, you won't be sorry

I too will vote for the V1 - and have one of the very earliest ones built - with all of the upgrades done as they came out. I've never had a problem with it either. Car & Driver repeatedly picks it as the best in real world driving tests and the bogey counter / direction arrows are awesome. Don't waste your money on a cheap imitation.

Yoyo, the V1 looks ugly in pictures but once you get your hand on one you will change your mind. Yes, it doesn't look like a melted DingDong like the other, 'modern' detectors but it's form follows it's function. I'm not a rapid V1 devotee like some others, I just think it's a pretty good detector. He11, any detector is better than none and my previous 8500 was almost as good as the V1.
Note, you can find out which are the best detectors by going to Ebay and comparing new and ebay prices. The V1 and E8500, even if over a year old, will bring 90% or better than retail on ebay. All the other detectors sell for pennies on the dollar. Maybe there is something to that.
Enjoy and learn to use whichever detector you get. Also enjoy the extra $$$ in your pocket when you slowly cruise by the tax man.

Beltronics All the Way

I've owned 5 Bels over the past few years and none have ever let me down. (Just don't get the cordless ones because the range is terrible) They keep getting better as a newer model comes out. Pretty nifty too on top of detecting radar. I like how there are different functions including inverted display (if you have to attach the detector upside down) and volt-meter (to see how much your battery puts out) and other useless stuff LOL.

Good discussion on the topic.

I'm in the process of reviewing RD's also. For those that have not looked here before, I found some good info on this site. The 2003 Speed Lab results were informative.

I recently purchased a new detector as well and did a bunch of research before buying. The most frustrating part of the research though was the bias that is built into these "tests". I'm unclear as to how Valentine can finish no higher than 3rd in any category for Radar Detectors.com yet be far and above every other brand with Car and Driver. Further research was clear in the fact that there is a conflict between Valentine and Radar Detector.com.

In any event, I narrowed my 2 choices down to Valentine and Escort and went with the Escort. Used in for past 2 months and no complaints so far....it's done what I bought it for!

Hey that's funny, looks like Beltronics 985 passed all the tests with flying colors while the Valentine1 missed a couple. Now I'm not sure how biased this report is considering it was sponsored by a company not to mention that there are typos on every page but still, flying colors. Hehe
