Post Where do you put your amp?

I have a 01 Xcab and want to install an amp. Under the back seat is out as I have a full enclosure for the woofers. Where esle can I put the amp, the passenger's seat has the jack, the drivers has a cable in the middle of the floor. Are there other option. 60/40 front seat by the way.

What about behind the rear wall? Drop your seat.
Remove the panel. There should be room to stand your amps up along the floor. I have a Rockford Foz 250a and Kicker Impulse next to each other, in addition to my EFX distribution block on the left side. You should have about 16 inches in height, and about 4 inches in depth to play with (measured from the bottom lip of the floor that the panel sits on) before it tapers up to no useable space. Check it out.

Don't quite understand. Are you saying that I should remove the rear seat and that there is a removalable panel there? Remember I have the Xcab not the 4 door. I don't belive I have any room behind the seat.

Yes. That's a problem. I visited a dealer today to look for myself. First, let me clarify amp position. I'm suggesting that you stand them up, so a "side" edge of the amp becomes the "bottom". If you can stand your amp up on your dining table, you should be able to mount it the same way along the rear wall, with the "bottom" of the amp against the floor.
If you reach up behind your rear seats from the floor, do you have any useable space at all before the tops of the seats meet the back wall? That's the space I'm suggesting you exploit, if you have any.

I built a custome enclosure to go under the rear seat. One side a 0.45cf sealed box for a 10" woofer, the other is open top for storage. I think it would be difficult to mount the amp behind it. It looks like under the seat is the only place.

did you say your jack is under the passenger seat? my 01 xlt 2wd supercab jack was under the rear seat. anyways, ford 3 year roadside asistance, who needs a jack? i have a subbox.net box under my rear seats and a sony xplod amp under the passenger seat. the wiring under the seat has enough length that it will fit around the amp. i unhooked it from under the seat(the clip that holds it in the middle) and it fits fine. the amp isnt even screwed to the floor cause it fits perfect and tight. want pics? email me. r6racing@worldnet.att.net

If you install under the driver/passenger seats, make sure when the seats slide back and forth the amp will not be damaged.

Hey haze10...

I put two amps in my truck, one under the driver side of the 60/40, and the other under the passenger's. If you pull the front seat out (its in two pieces), you can take that harness that goes to the belt tensioner and seat belt switch and move it over, then an amp can fit in there just fine.

Hey Haze, In my 98 xcab I took the back of the back seat out and trimmed some of the metal supports off and used strong two sided tape and stuck my amp to the wall behind the seat back. With the metal I cut away gone, it fits in there nicely and it is concealed. It really depends on how big your amp is on where you can put it. My amp is only about 6-7 inches wide so I can get away with what I did. In all the years I have been installing the one thing I have learned is it is all about stealth. If they can see it, most of the time they can't steal it. Plus, it looks better when you can't see it.....I hope that makes sense.

Cool

Aren't you guys concerned about heat? My amp gets warm to the touch even with a fan in it. What about adjusting the amp settings? A one time thing or is the seat back easy to remove?

I took some pictures of my install and posted them over the weekend. See them here.

That's the main page, then go to the "audio" link on the left.

rear seat

jay, how do you get the rear seat out. I see the bolts for the bottom cushion, but how about the back vertical, are there bolts or clips and do i have to remove the bottom in order to take out the back.

Once you remove the bottom bolts (there are two 10mm bolts) then you just lift the seat up. It's easier than you think!

Hey jayntguru,

I put my amp in the exact same place. During a really hot day the sub channel blew. The amp began cutting in and out even at low volumes. I felt the floor around the amp and it was HOT!! I had no idea that area of the floor got up that high? If I put my next amp there,I am definitely laying down heat reflective matierial under the carpet. I hope that will do some good.

Just wanted to let everyone know that it is possible to overheat an amp that is mounted in the same area,,,,98

Just remember your amp needs room to breath, only after a few minutes of use, an amp can reach a high degree of heat, just remember having it in a closed up position might lead to fire, and we don't want that.
