Wiring Gauge Dilemma

Hey Guys,

Alright, I'm currently doing a system in my project '92 Chevy Blazer.

I just got the amps (Alpine V-Power MRP-M1000 and Exile Shift 400.4) finally hooked up and running, and WOW it sounds ridiculous. Two Kicker Solo-Baric L5 12's in a sealed fiberglass box, absolutely unreal. The truck had a run of 4ga done extremely well (actually too well) under the carpet/seats in wire loom with 1000 zip ties so I had no choice but to leave it. Problem is it's Raptor 4ga and quite frankly doesn't seem to be the best ever, I think it's CCA or something to that effect. Definitely not pure copper I don't think.

Took this when I just got it hooked up and running, so don't hate on the wire management. They will all be hidden when it's finished and how I like it.

Because I couldn't really upgrade the 4ga (with the intention of running 4ga into a distribution block then splitting 4ga to the 1000 and 8ga to the 400.4), I decided to do a separate run of Stinger 8ga for the 4-channel. It's the best stuff I could find, all-copper and their top of the range wire and was run alongside the 4ga on the driver's side of the truck.

In testing the system, I can't help but feel that the Alpine is being starved of power. Serious lights dimming (including the one on the amp almost going completely dark) which may be a ground issue but the grounds are both pretty good IMO - 4ga directly to the body, then from that point directly to the frame with gold ring terminals and all the paint ground off where it contacts the metal. I still haven't done the big 3 upgrade but plan on doing it soon. The amp shut off after about two minutes (60 amp fuse let go) which I was sort of expecting to happen. Really needs 100A or bigger, could this be causing it to seem power starved?

Ideally I'd like to do either of the following options;

Leave my good Stinger 8ga copper wire run separately to the 4-channel and upgrade the 4ga to Knu Kolossus Flex with proper fusing, plus the big three upgrade and grounding the **** out of it.

OR, running some 1/0 Knu Kolossus Flex under the truck into a distribution block, and splitting it out there to one 4ga and one 8ga to feed the two amps.

This is what i have and it works perfectly fine. No dimming, no lack of power.

The big3 and a deep cycle battery will also help.

Pick up some HIGH QUALITY 1/0ga wire. Run a distro into 2 4ga. (Yes I do know that the Alpines take up to 8.... STUPID but run 4ga anyways.)

But whats the distance? And what is each amp fused for?

No, the Alpine takes 4ga and that's what it has. It's the Exile 4-channel that takes up to 8ga, and that's what it has as well.

The distance is probably a good 17-18 feet, since the battery is on the pass. side front, run back to the firewall, across to the driver's side and through the grommet along the side. I could reduce the length a whole lot by running it under the truck as you guys have mentioned lately. The Alpine is fused for 100A, not sure about the Exile.

KFX0R 18' Kolossus Fleks Kable 1/0 Red Power/Ground Wire
KFX4BL 8' **NEW**Kolossus Fleks Kable 4 Gauge Blue Power/Ground
KFX4BK 8' Kolossus Fleks Kable 4 Gauge Black Power/Ground Wire
KNI-11 KonFUSED High Current In-Line Fuse Holder (180A)
KNF-22D KonFUSED 2 Way Digital Distribution System (80A,100A)
KLE10BL 10' Klear Kable Blue 10 Gauge Speaker Wire

I just guessed the fuse ratings, I'd have to find out for sure before I actually order. I just do the fuse rating on both amps added together? Or is it something that has to be calculated?

Your gonna love those KonFUSED blocks those things are really nice. I just wish they had the flex wire out when I was installing my wire. Far as fuse ratings I'm brain farting at the moment. I think I used a online calculator when I bought mine.

Yes, I do have some still. But that needs to be discussed in a email away from the public posts.

1/0 split with a 150A main fuse would be fine. Then split off to a 6ga min (7ft max) to the Alpine. Then a 8 ga min to the Exile (7ft max).

I think I'll give them both 4ga. I'll have to carefully remove some strands on the end to thin it down for the Exile, but it's still better than 8ga no doubt
