dconner,bartak1, help!! Orion Amps

Hey, got a chance to snag 2 Orion Hcca 225 amps for 200 bucks. They'll even throw in a Sony x-over as well. Is this a steal, or just an ok deal. Gonna use them for the componets.

Orion is pretty much the armpit of amps. I wouldn't use them.

10-4. I remember these when they came out, just couldn't remember how they stacked up. I'll be sticking with the RF's for now. Anyone else got an opinion....

The HCCA 225 is actually a pretty solid amp. Very underrated, and back in the day it could hold its own fairly well. Could handle some pretty low impedences too. BUT, they will pull a **** ton of current.
And being older amps its hard to find ones that are in good shape and havent been beaten on...
What Rockfords do you have right now?
Features and whatnot on newer amps outwiegh the performance and oldskool 'wow' of the HCCA's if you ask me. ESPECIALLY if you are just running a set of comps off one.

Like Impact said thoug...Orion now days=boat anchors.

Got the type RF X5 -
mono amp, 700 watts @ two Ohm - via birth sheet from RF
RMS Power at 4 Ohms 275 W x 1
RMS Power at 2 Ohms 550 W x 1

And getting RF X2 - 2 channel
RMS Power at 4 Ohms 50 W x 2
RMS Power at 2 Ohms 100 W x 2

Might as well just stick with that, considering you already have one and they are more than capable of doing the job

So do you all recommend removing the rear speakers completely, or hook them up to the HU and turn them down, or blasting the sam hell outta them?

I wouldn't use the HCCA's for your seperates. They are meant to perform at low impedances. I used to own one and if I remember correctly their output is as follows

25x2@4ohms
50x2@2ohms
100x2@1ohm
200x2@.5ohm

I used to push 6 orion 12"xtr dvc's. The best part is when you pulled into the sound-off contest, you were in the 0-50 watt class.

Also the orion equipment is not nearly as good as it was back about 10 years ago or so.

They are, but your your application, I would just pass on them. Unless you really wanted them for the OldSkooledness

Like gryph said, these are were made to cheat yourself through a contest so to say The amp could do 400+wrms at 1 ohm bridged, but because of what Orion SAID they put out for power, you were put in a much lower power class. Or course back then every other company into competing was doing the same thing, so there wasnt a huge advantage

Those amps will KILL if you have a few DVC subs to run on them. I think you can talk them down to 100 or 125 then your getting a good deal. Keep in mind you have to drop the ohms to under 1 to get the most power of of these. and run 4g wire at min. if your going to run one sub that is SVC and 4 ohm you will not get the power out of this amp that you want.
I have an old Rockford 20X2 amp that will run 4 18s! but it is just a 40 watt amp. (40ix is the modle)
