no sound problem

alright, today the subs stopped working. when i got home i checked it and the amp was actually turning on, but nothing was coming out. the protect light isnt on, so im thinking that its the av cables or the pre amp i put in so i could use the stock headunit for a while. ive used my multimeter to check everything and it all works except the speaker hookups. its not the subs because i doubt they would both go out at the same time and they are both receiving very close to their rms power and are only 5 months old.(2 xplod 12"s 1300 max 390 rms) amp is a 1000w xplod amp. any suggestions?

got a 1/8" stereo to RCA adapter? You can get them at Wal-Mart, plug in a MP3 player direct to the amp and see if you get music.

Is there any way for you to bypass the preamp? You might try disconnecting the RCA cables from the preamp and tapping the ends with your finger. You might be able to get some noise out of the amp doing that. If that works the headunit or preamp is messing up.

Are you getting any indication that the amp is turning on? Like a speaker thump or buzz? I mean anything besides a power light.

What model amp is that and how do you have the subs connected?

its an 2ch. xplod 1000w XM-1652Z. ive got it wired left hookups to left sub and same for right. couldnt bridge cause that wouldve exceeded the lowest ohms it can safely handle. no buzzing or thumping that i can hear, its never done that at all when it comes on. when i tap the end of the rca cable, will it just be a thump sound from the subs?

i checked and tapped, no sound from tapping either cable. does it always tap with every amp, or is it bad RCAs, amp, or subs. i hope its not the subs cause they shouldnt have blown out at the same time, theyre only 5 months old, and i hope theyre still under warranty if thats the case. if its the amp i can look at it, i have some experience with computer hardware. dont see how both rcas couldve went out at the same time, but ive heard of it happening. ive got a buddy supposed to bring me a stereo to rca adapter tomorrow, i used to have one but it got messed up and thrown away. any more suggestions?

disconnect the subs from the amp and then take a 9v battery and touch the speaker wires to it. The cone should move smoothly in or out depending on if you hooked the - to - or + to -

god im so frustrated, i took apart amp and nothing i can tell is wrong, but that not to say its not right. i took some severed rca cables i had laying around and plugged them into the amp, turned off the crossover, and touched the 9v to the ends of the rca. no sound from subs so i hope im not looking at a new amp.

Do not put that 9v on the amps RCA inputs. That's a sure fire way to mess it up.

I think if your RCA cables were secure and safe from damage then your amp is probably toast. It's hard to say cause you still have the headunit and RCA cables to consider. If you don't have any extra stuff around I'd start with the amp since it seems to be a problem right now.
