Question Amp Question

I have a Kenwood 8103D 1000w amp, It is pushing (2) 10 inch shallow mount pioneer subs and sounds great but if i listen to my stereo about 3/4 volume for about 20 minutes the amp shuts off, It does not feel hot , any Ideas why this is happening ? Do I need bigger amp ?

What is the voice coil configuration of your subs and how are they wired to the amp? It could be you are sending too low a load to the amp. Also what size power and ground wire are you running to the amp?

I'm not sure of the config. , my buddy hooked it up for me , but want to get some other input besides from him, my speakers are Pioneer TS-SW2541D, and the power wire to my amp is huge and so is the ground, I will ask him when he comes into work this morning your two questions, thanks..

It looks like those subs are 4 ohm subs. So wired together, they should be at a 2 ohm final load for the amp. There should be no problems running that amp at 2 ohm all day long. If the amp is not getting hot to the touch when it shuts down, there might be a problem with the amp. Voltage really should not be an issue with large wire. Not many things it could be as long as the subs are wired up correctly and you have the proper power and ground. The amp would be my first guess as the problem.

Deconder,

The two subs are wired seperately, so that should only be 4 ohms, He might have my gain turned up to high, the dail switch on the amp where you match the pre-output of the head unit, the head unit is a Kenwood 817dvd, the pre-out is 5 volts I think, Should I check and see if those are matching ? I might just go buy the 9103D but I dont want to blow up the 10's , what do you think?

You have two sets of speaker terminals so, I assume, each sub is wired to one set of terminals. It is a mono amp so, the amp is still internally wiring the speakers together for a 2 ohm final load. But that should not be a problem. I would turn the gains all the way down and try it and see if it still shuts off. If it does that is your problem. If that changes nothing, then you still have a problem that appears to be amp related.

Question

Deconder,

Well I pulled the amp out and my buddy had the input sensetivity up all the way, so I cranked it down just under half way, seems to run fine now , but it doesnt hit as hard as it used too, so I went and got the Kenwood 9103D (1800watt ) peak , 500rms , in your opinion do you think this will be ok for the 10'' subs I have...?

I would be very careful with the gain setting on the amp. Your subs are rated at 250 watts rms and your amp will do 450 watts per sub. You can do it as long as you are careful. By that I mean do not turn the gain all the way up to get more bass. You really need to set the gains with a multimeter to make sure they are correct.
