Basic Amp question

Ok for some reason I can find and answer to my question by using the search feature.

I am going to run 2 RE 8" DV 4ohm subs by running voice coils in series and subs in parallel to give me a 4 ohm resistance. I want to provide 150-200watts to each sub. Do I need to get a mono Amp rated at 300-400 watts @ 4 ohm or one rated at 150-200watt @ 4ohm.

Sorry for the Amp 101 question.

Amp power

When purchasing your amp first thing is to make sure that it's a high quality amp. You can have the greatest sub(s) in the world but with a bad amp and unprofessional wiring it doesn't make a difference how good your sub(s) are.

You need to get a 300-400watt amp but I recomend going at least 50 watts over the maximum capability for the subs. If you are running an amp that is being pushed to it's limits it creates heat and it's common sense that audio equipment should not get too hot.

Since you're installing yourself make sure each mount (to the amp, sub AND GROUND) looks professional. If you have a bad ground you will hear it in the performance of the sub. Note that you don't need an exceptional ground for an amp to work, take the time and do it properly. Good luck on your install

I would go with a 2 channel amp rated at 150-200 each channel at 2 ohm. One sub per channel wired to 2 ohm. The only reason is in the future I could always use that amp for door speakers and such if I get a truck or car that I'm not putting a sub in. With a mono amp you can only use it for subs. It might be cheaper too. But that's just me.

Not a bad idea. Right now I am going to run the Front an rear speakers in parallel two the first two channels on my Audiobahn 4ch amp and run each sub at 2 ohm to channel 3 and 4. I will be pushing this amp for all its got so I am going to see how it goes and if it struggles I will be purchasing another amp. I already have a dual amp wire kit with distribution blocks under passanger rear seat..

By the way your dimensions on the box worked great. Fit like a glove. Instead of carpet I sprayed box inside and out with a product called Plastidip. Rubberized plastic coatin in aerosal form. Worked out really well.

Thanks for all your help. Just waiting on rest of my speaker wire to come in to finish the job.

Glad it fits good. No carpet on mine. It's vinyle that looks like leather.
Make sure and get pictures up when you finish.
