Hey B-MAN

I thought I would open up a little discussion between you and I. I saw that in the one thread you said you had used some of the HP lab test equipment on various car audio components. I just had a few questions. Did you conduct your tests in an environment that simulates that of a car? Not flaming you or anything close to that I was just curious of your results. Since the cap thread I know that you are of great knowledge in electronics both theory and applied physics thereof. What brands and cable types did you compare in the cables test (RCA cables)? Did you run tests on noise rejection characteristics and performance? I assume that you did in fact see a difference between the two cables in your lab results but not large enough of one to justify the additional costs? I, like you, rely heavily on lab test results to justify an upgrade. More so in the past when I competed and money was more of an issue since I wanted the best increase per dollar spent. Anyway, spill em man. I want all the details.

Oh hey, I agree totally with what you said on the monster cables when it comes to the wire gauge. The only factors people should be concerned with are the wire gauge charts. Here is a copy of the wire ratings chart from IASCA and a good rule of thumbe to go by.

Length of run (in feet)
Current 0-4 4-7 7-10 10-13 13-16 16-19 19-22 22-28

0-20A 14 12 12 10 10 8 8 8
20-35A 12 10 8 8 6 6 6 4
35-50A 10 8 8 6 6 4 4 4
50-65A 8 8 6 4 4 4 4 2
65-85A 6 6 4 4 2 2 2 0
85-105A 6 6 4 2 2 2 2 0
105-125A 4 4 4 2 2 0 0 0
125-150A 2 2 2 2 0 0 0 00

Notice that IASCA uses a minimum of 14 AWG wire. I think this chart was done primarily for the power supply to the amp and not so much for amp to speaker ratings. Anyway, maybe this info will help someone in the future to make a decision. Heck if we get enough info on it between those of us here maybe we can get it made into a tech section or a sticky thread.

Cool

Hi Chris -

I have not been ignoring you, I've been swamped at work and have had a limited amount of time for surfing.

I will try to dig up some of the info I had regarding the tests my friends and I did on various pieces of audio gear.

That was a company ago and I will need some time to find the stuff.

On top of it all, I'm trying to buy a new house and it is driving me crazy !!!

Anyway, I'll hook up with you once things slow down a bit...
