'01 7700 series

So my old '93 is for all reasonable purposes, dead. Long story short, the RF tire blew out on the highway, I slammed into a guardrail which bent a bunch of stuff in the steering. Got it fixed but the shop f'ed up and didn't reassemble it right, and about 150 miles later on the highway the RF wheel/hub assembly disintegrated and the wheel(and hub, and disc/caliper) literally just popped off at about 50mph. Lots of damage and I've lost faith in the truck, it's too damn rusty, and not just on the body. Too bad, because the powertrain runs great.

Anyway, I was cruising the want ads and found a 2001 F-150 "7700 Series". I noticed on the rear badge a small "7700" underneath and asked the owner. He said it means it has the 250's transmission, suspension, and tow rating. Was he right?
It's an extended cab, XLT, tow package, 71k miles, and a tonneau cover. Went for a look and it's super clean both inside and out. Seems to drive like new. Said all maintenance was done by a dealer, 1 owner.

Are these 7700's desirable? I tow here and there and cart a snowmobile around in the bed during the winter, but that's about it. Any inherent problems or issues with these "special" editions? Think $8500 is a good price? I thought so.

The 7700 (7700 lb GVW) is basically the Lt. duty F250 that was sold in '97-'98. Its has 7 lug wheels, 4R100 trans, larger rear end, and larger torsion bars (if 4X4).

I've had two 7700's at work, the one I'm driving now has 120K on it and rides like new.

Just bought one last fall...

Paid $5500CND at an auto auction, put 2000 into it to passs the safety. My brother works at ford and says they're worth about 8-10 with my mileage (180 000 km)

In the end I'll probably be even. I'd by another one with lower miles if I could. The only thing you want to watch out for on these trucks is the lower ball joints, cost me $500 (with family discount) to get em replaced. So factor that in and I'd say 8500 is reasonable for 71k.

Of course I'd get him down as low as possible... try for 7000 and go from there. These trucks are a realy good comprimise between a LD 150 and a 250.

I know a couple of guys that swear by theirs. Only problem is if you decide to customize, wheels may be hard to come by.

It's a 4wd model so the price seems pretty reasonable. Not a bargain, but not a rip-off either. Pretty much accepted value.

Found today another possibility: A 2002 F-150 XLT, 5.4, 4x4, x-cab with 78k miles. Clean except for a couple small dents on the tailgate and a scrape on the mirror. 90% tires and new pads/rotors all around. Factory premium stereo with the console disc changer. Owner is asking $9500 or B/O, and it's been in the ads for a couple weeks now so I bet I can get it for less.

the 7700 series trucks came with lower gears in the 9.75 rear end, heavier springs, better brakes on the front (same size as the lightnings)

Other than the differences between the 7700 and the regular f150, were there any meaningful differences between 01 and 02 models?

The owner of the '01 7700 is asking $8500, but is waiting on another buyer who put $100 down, but has been stalling for a week past when he said he would pick it up, and the seller is obviously impatient. He was supposed to pick it up today, but I called the seller and he said that the buyer stalled again until Friday. The seller told me that he gave the stalling buyer until Friday, but then it's mine. It's clean as can be, couldn't find a single dent, scratch, or mark anywhere.

The owner of the black '02 wants $9500 and he said I'm the first "bite" on the truck since it was listed about 3 weeks ago, and he seems kinda in a hurry to sell it-why, I'm not sure. It's not as clean as the '01, couple dents here and there but nothing major, and it's got slightly higher mileage. I could probably offer $8500 and get it.

I'm leaning toward the 7700, seems to be more truck for less money.

The 7700 series has..
- larger brakes, front and rear, 4 wheel disc as well.
- 4r100 tranny (same as lightning and superduties)
- 10.25" rear diff with 3.73 gears, front is still 8.8
- larger torsion bars
- extra rear leaf
- heavier frame
- 7 lug wheels

There are others I am probably missing but these are the major ones.

Ratings for the truck you are looking at (ex cab short box 4x4) are..
Payload - 2600lbs
towing - 8400lbs

It also weighs a couple hundred more pounds than a 4x4 supercrew

Two more things all of you missed

That truck had a larger radiator and tranny cooler. I have recently added both of those to my truck and they're awesome. The tranny cooler off that truck is awesome and makes a nice mod to our other trucks.

Go for the 7700. Very nice trucks as long as you aren't too picky about your wheels.

Question for you guys? Will the rear springs from a 7700 series or an F250 from a similar year bolt up directly to the mounts under a F150? If so, I would like to find some in the junkyard for mine. What do you guys think? Thanks.
