Want to see the insides of a cam phaser?

Sure you do.

These two came out of a 2005 Expedition, and were noisy as hell. Sounded like the valvetrain was about to explode. Let's take one apart.

The back side of the phaser. Pictured off to the right is the trigger wheel for the cam position sensor, and the spring. The pin at 12:00 in the middle of the phaser indexes to a slot on the camshaft.

The trigger wheel is held to the cam phaser by three small roll pins. These roll pins bend or shear off completely. This is where the dull knocking noise comes from.

Here's the internals of the phaser, shown from the back side with the cover plate removed. The VCT actuator (the thingy sticking up through the valve cover) energizes and allows oil flow into the phaser. The phaser is actually two halves; one half is connected to the camshaft, one half is connected to the timing chain. The chambers, the little spaces between the vanes, create sort of a fluid coupling between the camshaft and the timing chain. Oil flow into one side of the vanes advances the camshaft, and oil flow into the other side retards it.

In an absolute worst case scenario, the cam timing could get stuck somewhere, be it full advance or full retard or anywhere in between. Depending on where it hangs, you'll get various driveability problems, at low speeds, high speeds, or anywhere in between.

It shouldn't fail to the point where engine damage occurs.

So could you pull the pins out and replace them? Or is it toast once it starts making the noise?

That's my question too; If the new ones won't do it I want to replace my noisy ones too.

The latest level cam phaser should be 3R2Z-6A257-DA. I have one of these phasers in my truck, on the passenger's side, and ~40K miles later it's still quiet.

Oh hush.

I suppose if you really wanted to, you could replace the pins, but depending on how badly they're bent, they may have egg-shaped the holes in the trigger wheel (from the wheel kinda flopping around/rocking back and forth). Ford doesn't service the pins separately, and really with all the work you have to go through to get to the trigger wheel/roll pins, you may as well replace the phaser.

2006 and up seems to be good to go. I haven't seen or heard any complaints about engine noise in those related to cam phasers or lash adjusters.

Both sides and the updated lash adjusters, on an '05 Expedition, I started on it first thing that morning and drove it out the building at about 4:00 that afternoon. The Expeditions and Navigators are harder to do, because there's more stuff in the way on the passenger's side (auxillary climate control stuff).
