Electrical will not shut off
Electrical will not shut off
My sons battery was dead or drained this morning. Charged it up and cleaned up the connectors and applied dielectric grease to them.Truck started right up. (1997 f 150 4x2 5.4lL).
When I shut it off the blower (heater) won't shut off. Also see the airbag switch is lit up. They must be draining down the battery.
I turned the ignition back and forth many times but it won't shut off.
I disconnected the battery until I can figure it out.
Anyone got any ideas???????

Hey 89Carlson, please let me know what you find out.
Steve, I'll check on the relay, only thing is the light that tells you if the passenger side air bag is on or off is also staying on. Haven't really looked into this very deep yet. Just had time to unhook the battery and post my problem here. Kinda hoped for a common simple solution.
I'll look into it more after work and post my findings.
thanks, bullseye670....................

I can control the blower speed. I will check the wipers and turn signals. I do know tht the radio won't turn on under this wierd condition.
One thing I have noticed is the key is well worn and can be removed at any time. Thats what wore down the thing in the first place, I think. When my son turned it off last time, he turned it all the way to accessory and pulled the key out.
Gotta give him a break though, he's only got his driving permit (hes 15). Thats why its my problem. Its actually MY truck.
I'm wondering if the issue is in the ignition. The fact that the radio won't come on tends to steer me away from that.

Hey 89Carlson, any prognosis on your truck??
I've been looking at relays, but still haven't located my problem yet.
I've got the blower motor, blinkers or flashers as their called and the little light on the passenger airbag shut off switch all staying on.
I've got to try and find where this items get their power from when the key is turned on and hopefully I can isolate it from their.
I need some schematics that might help. I've been unable to get any good ones.
I have had a lot of rain and some leaks on the drivers side.Very wet carpet. Not exactly sure where its comming in at. Kinda think its all related.

Update
Well I got the truck back today, they ended up replacing the fuse box and GEM module under the driver side dash. What had happened was the windsheild had a leak in the top right hand corner and water ran down the A pillar to the fuse box. $815.00 dollar repair!! If I were you I would try letting the truck run with the heat on the floor and see if it won't dry out before replacing all that. Mine didn't look all that corroded, but its hard to say what water does to electrical conponents. Good luck
Thanks for the info 89carlson. Did they remove and replace the windshield?
The trucks currently sitting in the garage drying out. I had so much water I had to use a wet dry vac. to remove water on the floor.
Sure sounds like my problem is in the same thing. Trying to decide if I should try and remove the windshield or just try to seal it up with silicone. I haven't tried to replace glass in about 20 years. Not sure if I can remove the windshield without breaking it.

Thanks. I got the GEM and fusebox out today. One of the large connectors did have water in it.
I picked up a used set at the scrap yard earlier.$4.95.
I've got to find out if a 99 will fit in a 1997. Couldn't pass up the parts for that kind of price though.

Hi Check my other posts. I'm having the same problem. I got my windshield re-sealed by a glass co. for about a $100and warrantied for life as long as I own the truck. They were able to remove and re-seal the windshield as it had not been properly installed from the factory. I probably could of pushed hard on it pushing it right out. I figured I should start there to correct the main problem of water. I'm nursing electrical problems now. Did some of the same things disconnecting the battery to save it. We haven't had any rain since 12/29 and the electrical is definitely drying out. I'm shopping for a repair now and may tackle myself. On the way home from the glass shop I started having the blower motor running when I turned off the truck. After I got home I disconnected the battery and pulled the fuse (40 AMP) for the blower motor. Check your owners manual. All of my other electrical problems have gone away for the moment. I'm holding my breath for everything to dry out. This same thing happened to me under warranty in 2003. At that time the "windshield was resealed" and the GEM and Fuseblock were replaced. Yes the re-seal job was a hatchet job. "Blue Oval dealership, Quality is job 1" (venting).
The main thing GET THE WATER LEAKS STOPPED or you'll be in the same boat after the next rain. Thumbs up to the pro glass guys that have all the tools and experience. I'm going to let it dry out a bit more before replacing the fuse. I'll keep you posted on the progress.
