Center console cut out under mat

Silly question... does anyone know what the cut out under the mat in the center console is for? I was cleaning the inside of my truck the other day, took the little rubber mat out under the sliding door, and noticed this little cut out area. Maybe its nothing.

do your keys fit in it? Maybe a spot to hide a key?

or maybe you can put an (unused) cigarette lighter in there for storage?
Do they still make those???

Ah! I bet you're right! I'll check to see if my key fits there. That would make sense, since the truck has the keypad for unlocking. If it fits, I'll have to memorize the code.

I'm going out on a limb here.

You have push button start...

This is where your key fob will likely go to re-sync the fob in case of a starting failure. Not sure why, but when they lose communication with the receiver in the starter button the vehicle will not start. If this is the case, you place the fob here to reconnect then it should start.

My wife has an Explorer and her receptacle is in the center console. Her recently replaced Motorcraft battery died last Friday and the car would not start. Since I was at home, I started YouTubing solutions and found out what was supposed to work.

File that tidbit of knowledge away for the day the truck doesn't want to start.

mkosu04, you nailed it! Key fits perfectly.

I don't have the push button start, but maybe they put this groove in all the new F150s with the center console.

I'll have to memorize the code on my keypad now.
