Getting the Itch for a New Truck

What's up guys, so the more I see the newer style trucks out driving the more i am starting to want one.

I've just started looking around at what's out there, and how they are priced. If I'm going to get a new truck, it's going to be loaded with features.

Where can I get a good break down of the packages and what they include? It used to be simple when I was buying my current truck (2005) - the packages were straight forward and easy to tell apart. Now I'm all confused!

Love my center console shifter, is there a certain package that's included with?

Panoramic roof - on both the 15's and 16's? Also which package is that?

I have two young kids (2 1/2 and 4 mo) so they will be in car seats for some time still, how is the leg room in the SuperCrews? Right now my knees are in the dash or close to it. Anyone with the experience moving from my Gen to newer?

Haven't decided on which engine yet. I tow a 6400 lb (dry) camper 5 to 10 weekends a year, so the 3.5l ecoboost may be nice, but coming from my loud/mean/fun Roush S/C with true duals I'm not sure how I would like it being that quiet haha. Besides tow package, anything to look out for?

Any reason to pick a 15 over a 16 besides possible pricing? Any big issues I need to be aware of while I'm starting to search?

I thought about looking into a F250 with the 6.7l just because I have always wanted one, but may not be the best choice for my daily driving. I average about 6200 miles a year since the wife prefers to drive her 14' Explorer on long trips. I would probably increase that some if it had the same features as hers and got better mpgs. Year avg is 10.85 over 6k mi - that's what happens when you make small 2-8 miles trips a day in the city.

Need to Blue Book my current truck, but haven't got there yet.

Anyways, I'm rambling -- What else should I look for in a newer truck?

Thanks guys

If you like the sound of your S/C'd 5.4, look at a coyote 5.0 they make S/C kits for it and with a simple exhaust upgrade it is the best sounding engine I've heard in a ford in 30 years. also the 15-up yotes' got 25 more hp (for 385) than mine in a lighter truck.

Good information. I need to get out and test drive them both at some point. I do love the sound of my truck, but don't mind my wife's explorer, and being able to hold a convo while pulling the camper would be nice too.

I'm going to assume that the 3.5l don't sound that great with an exhaust upgraded.

If you have never been in or seen the inside of the newer generation super cabs (2009 forward) you absolutely have to sit in one. The difference from the older generation (pre-2009) is huge! When I first opened the back doors to these I was amazed.

You are talking about your leg room in the front with car seats in the back? I just don't see how you couldn't have the driver seat all the way back and never come close to a car seat in the back.

That's good to hear! I tried to look up the specs, and thought I saw a few inches difference. That would be a welcomed upgrade. Love my kids, just not the way I currently sit. I'm only 6'2" so not like I'm huge haha. I have the same problem in my wife's explorer.

I really need to learn all the options and configurations that is possible to really narrow down my search.

The 09-14 screw cabs are exactly 6" longer than the 04-08 and it all goes into the rear seat leg room. I'm 6'3" and I can put the front seat all the way back and sit in the back seat and my knees don't hit the front seat like they do in an 04-08.

The 15+ screw cabs have the same wheel base as the 09-14's do so best guess is interior dimensions are close to mine.

That's great to hear. Since you have had both, how is the heat & A/C in the back on newer models? Feel bad that it's cool up front but kids in the back seem hot. Those two small vents in the center console don't do enough.

Wish the would have the overhead vents like the explorer

My kids never complained, but they weren't back there much. But I did discover that you need to have the controls set to blow out the dash vents in front of you to get anything out of the rear vents. If you put it on defrost or floor heat, you get nothing in the back.

For the record, I never had an 04-08 screw. My cousin does and I've sat in the back in hers just to compare to mine. My 05 FX4 and the 07 FX4 were both scabs.

Shanks12, I just upgraded from an 2005 extended cab with the 5.4 and have two kids in car seats (I know the pain of sitting the truck with my knees in the dash).

I now have a 2016 with the crew cab and 3.5 eco boost. The difference in leg room is second to none, I can put the seat where it's comfortable for me and not come close to the kids in the car seats.

I can't say much about the towing as i haven't had the chance to take my travel trailer out yet with it, but i got the max tow package so that I wouldn't have to worry when towing. The max tow comes with a transmission cooler, improved suspension and integrated trailer brake control (which is awesome ). I'll let you know how it pulls in a couple of weeks after a good weekend trip.

Good luck in your search. I love mine so far.

That's always good to hear. I love my kids, but they sure do take up a lot of room.

Yeah I am pretty sure I would be getting the Max tow package. Here is a couple pics pulling our camper now:

I'm sure whenever I do make the switch I will miss this truck, but would welcome some new features

I went from an 06 supercrew to a Tundra Crew Max and was blown away by how much space the Tundra had. Went from the Tundra to a 14 Ecoboost SuperCrew and felt it had so much more room than my Crew Max. I did like how the Crew Max could recline a little.

About a year ago I traded the 14 to a 15 SuperCrew 5.0 and I'm not sure if it's psychological or not but it feels as if my 15 had a little more room than my 14. Now having both the 3.5 Eco as well as the 5.0 I have to say I love them both. The eco is so quiet it's amazing while the V8 has a really nice bark to it when I'm getting it on the freeway or going through a yellow light.

Towing, my boat isn't too heavy so it may not be a good comparison but both the Eco as well as the V8 kept it quiet inside.

I was like you and kept seeing the new style and liking them more and more. Took an ugly hit on my 14 but I feel it's worth it having the 15.

Good luck with the research!
