Fuel Economy Issues

Awhile back I mentioned about my low gas mileage, and I asked if anyone else was experiencing lower than normal mileage. At the time I was getting something like 12-13 MPG. No one seemed to be having the issue i'm having, so I took it to my dealer. The first time I went they said give it some time the engine will break in between 5-7k miles.

I took their advice and kept driving it, and it didn't really get any better. Once I hit the 7k mark I took it in and told them about it. The dealer seemed to not make a big deal about this, and said the computer wasn't bringing up any fault codes. When I got back in my truck, after getting it back all it seemed they did was check the history on the drivers screen.

Now I am around 10k miles. The MPG has gone up but by no means a lot. My last tank I got 14.8 MPG. That's a far cry from 18 MPG I should be getting. The best I have ever gotten was 16.1 MPG and that was more highway driving than usual and me trying to be as light on the gas pedal as I could.

I know MPG is subjective, and I live in Pittsburgh which is a pretty hilly area. By no means do I expect to get the best MPG, but I would think I would get better than the 5.0s in my area.

Two side notes:
#1
I don't know if this is part of the issue, but I have a 36 gallon tank and to this day I have not put more than 31 gallons of gas in for a fill up. I even ran past the miles left on the tank gauge one time just to see if my gauges are screwed up. I just never want to push it though (don't want to be the idiot out of gas on the side of the road).

#2
When I was getting around 13 MPG my miles left gauge would be over 600 miles. Now that I am getting in the 14's, my miles left when full is just over 500.

Am I being ****, or do you guys think I have an actual gripe about my MPG.
Thanks for reading my novel.

Are you figuring this out manually or relying on the computers numbers?

What size motor?

I have been using the computers numbers for the most part. I have checked the numbers with some math a couple of times, and it seems to be the same.

Sorry I forgot to add that. I have the 3.5 ecoboost.

First, figure it by using miles driven divided by gallons pumped. Every. Single. Time. Keep track of it. I use fuelly.com.

Second, what's your driving style? In town or highway? Traffic? What speeds? Do you start out like a granny or a 17 year old driving his uncle's Mustang GT? All of that makes a HUGE difference.

I have a 3.5 ecoboost. 2016. Yes I too get only 12-13 average. 15.5 highway if lucky. And only can fill 31 gallons in dry tank. Weird right.

I have a 2015 with the 3.5 Ecoboost which is about 2 months old and 2000 miles so far.

To date, I normally get 15-16 in a mixed mode of city and a bit of highway driving. Around 16.5 when running at 80mph on the freeway and about 19.5 if I run it at 60-65mph. This has been pretty consistent for me.

The MPGs do tank the colder the temps get. Here is MN, when the temps dropped to zero, the mileage drops too. I see the same thing happen on my fusion with the 2.0 ecoboost.

I have had 3 Fusions with Ecoboosts. When I bought the 1st one, my mileage was not very good. I spent some time "learning" how to drive it and the mileage improved. I not get fantastic mileage with the Fusions. If you have a heavy foot and spool up the turbo, your mileage will suffer.

Just my experience

Fordman,
I'll start tracking it manually more.

I'm a pretty "normal" driver I would say. I live in the burbs of Pittsburgh, so I drive a mix of city traffic and highway driving. I don't drive it like I stole it anymore. I'm in my 30's so the lead foot really isn't there anymore. For some perspective on how I drive. My last F150 was a 07 5.4 litre V8, and I had no trouble getting the projected MPG.

Northlander adds a good point about the weather. The colder temps definitely zap MPGs, especially if you let your truck warm up. Hopefully in the next couple months your numbers will come up a few MPG with the warmer weather and summer blend fuel.

If you were able to get the EPA numbers with your previous truck, then you should be able to do the same with this truck.

If you track your numbers, at least you will have something of proof to tell the dealers.

What is your rear end gear? 3.31, 3.55, or 3.73?

I would actually have to disagree with this statement. I found out with my Fusions as I said above that I had to alter my driving style. Once I did that, I no longer had issues.

I would suggest putting the dash display on the turbo gauge and watch now much the turbo is spooled up. The less you see that graph increase the better your MPGs will be.

The temps are likely also part of your issue to some degree.

Let us know how it goes

I get what you are saying, but, I was mostly talking about his driving style. No jack-rabbit starts, not running 95 MPH down the highway, etc.

It could just be that the OP likes the power of the EB too much!

To get mpg, you must stay out of the turbos, and if you idle to warm up the truck or at lights, it's a KILLER.

I have the same issue/question about the tank size… I've never put more than 32 gallons in it...

There are a whole host of factors that make it hard to pin down a good comparison, but Ill chime in for what its worth. 2015 3.5EB, screw, 6.5' box 4X4, 3.55 gears. This is my work truck, so I do a great deal of freeway, but a fair bit of city stop, and go between accounts. Im not easy at all on the throttle ever! My typical freeway speed is 70-80. Unladen I always see high 17 to low 18mpg on 92 octane. I also haul multiple times a week, any where from 500 to 1800 in the bed, with no real affect on the aforementioned figures. My last tow was 6k lbs for about 100 miles, and that tank still calculated 15.8 mpg. For me this truck has exceeded my expectations. I currently have 7900 miles, and counting.
