First Truck, should I buy this 2010 F150 Lariat with 176k miles?

Hello Everyone,

I just bought my first house and I am wanting to buy my first truck. All throughout my life, I have driven Japanese cars that easily topped 200k miles with no major issues at all.

I want to buy this 2010 F150 Lariat with 176K miles for 15.4K. Does this truck have a higher longevity than what most people are saying? I have been hearing mixed things about the 3V 5.4L motor. The truck does not have any rust at all as it has been in the south all of its life.

If the engine is quiet it should be okay. No spark plug issues in the 2010, it has the updated heads. However, there is the VCT/cam phaser system you have to be aware of, when it starts making noise you are looking at a $2000 repair for a full timing job. I would personally look for a 2011 or newer with a 5.0.

I will be test driving the truck Saturday and will be paying close attention for engine noise such as cam phaser tick. 2k doesn’t sound too bad, if I were to get this truck I would save money as an emergency.

Other than the cams and timing system, the 5.4 3v is a solid engine. Ticks could also be cam followers (lifters), cylinder #3 is weak, Cam bearings are integral with the heads and caps (direct contact) but they can be machined for bearings. I've heard of them going 400k, but also heard of them going out before 100k. Engine is sensitive to keeping the oil clean, correct grade, and proper oil filter. Can't go wrong with Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend and Motorcraft filter, change every 3 to 5k.

Thoughts on using 5W30? Also if I don’t drive much which interval should come first to be safe , time or miles?

My Brother has a 2010 Lariat 4x4 5.4 with around 285K on the clock. He did have a catastrophic engine failure beginning in the #3 cylinder at 210K. He bought a reman motor for 5000K installed. It's been running like new since the new motor install. Everything else about the truck is still functioning as new.

If it were mine, I'd probably run 5W30.

Would there be any signs of the follower going out?

He paid $5000.00 for the reman motor and the complete install through a neighborhood garage that he trusts. The guy did the initial teardown for discovery and recommended the reman dealer. Place called PowerSource for the engine, 3000 dollars and change, the rest to the garage for teardown on old and install on new.

Would it be a safer route to get a F150 from 2011-2014 with the 5.0?
