Something fell out of my oil bottle into my crankcase.

2009 f-150 4.6l v8 W model, 249,000 miles

Normal oil change. I popped open the bottle and started pouring the oil into the fill and right near the end something that looked metallic fell out of the bottle and went into the case, I belive it was metallic because it clanked the side and sounded like metal on metal. I still have the bottle seal in my hand which is fully intact so I know it's not the seal. I can't seem to see anything down there and I stuck my magnet to see if I could fish it out but nothing stuck to it. Do I have to drop the oil pan? This is my only vehicle unfortunately so I don't have means to do a whole lot of stuff.

I just went out there with my endoscope and couldn't get anything from it. The main chamber where the oil is poured appears to be clean but I can't get any deeper to see if it goes anywhere else.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

I'd pull the valve cover quick. It's not hard.

Thank you for the reply!

I've looked at a few online videos and resources, would you happen to have any additional resources for removing the valve cover? I'm relatively experienced with automotive work but I've managed to go this long without removing a valve cover on a Ford.

Thank you again!

Hardest part might be getting to it. But I believe it's 12 bolts and a PCV valve.

Just be easy on the seal when taking the valve cover off.

Ok so I got the valve cover off and I looked as deep as I could and I couldn't see anything in the crankcase that looked out of place. Do you think I should button it back up and assume I was seeing things? Or should I drop the oil pan and see if anything is in there? I can't imagine the piece making it all the way to the oil pan since it's pretty far down from the oil spout.

I'm conflicted as to what I should do. On one hand I feel like it's highly unlikely that a piece would have worked its way down so far to where I couldn't see it at all, on the other hand if there is something inside the crankcase and it gets lodged in the timing chain it's likely game over from there.

Since the cover is off, take a magnetic probe wand and run it down each hole or other likely hiding place. If you didn't run it, should be near the oil fill spout area I would think. If something does get into the crankcase, the oil screen will keep it out of the oil pump intake pipe and the rest of the motor. Virtually zero (like none) chance for something in the crankcase climbing up to the timing chain and getting up on top of the sprocket to fall back between the sprocket & chain. Just don't roll the truck over upside down.

I'm guessing the oil bottle was sealed as in not tampered with when opened.

You didn't see anything, just heard "something"???

Maybe a wrench on the floor rolled over, etc. The mind can deceive you.

I am absolutely sure I saw and heard something come out of the bottle and go into the spout. WHAT it is though is the mystery. The oil bottle was brand new and only open for a few minutes

I bought a bunch of those little tiny rare earth magnets and stuck them all down my 12" screwdriver then taped it all up with electrical tape so it's like a super magnet stick now. I'm going to go stick that everywhere and see what comes up. I got cut short because it started to rain :/
