Hi guys, I noticed some odd cracks on the tread of my tires today. I'm not sure if I ran something over, or it's an odd wear pattern. The tires have about 40,000 miles on them but I need for them to last until this time next year as were replacing the tires on my wife's flex.
Thanks!
I wouldn't be worried about it myself. looks like you have plenty of tread and the cracks don't look deep to me. just keep an eye on them. don't go off of just my word though. I've been known to be wrong in the past. lol
I am not a tire expert, but that looks like ozone cracking to me. Normally starts on the sidewall/tread junction, but can occur anywhere. Look at the bottom of the grooves in the pictures and you can see a bunch of checking as well. Who makes the tires?? I just got a nice warranty settlement from Goodyear on the tires on the wife's minivan. They were not even that worn, but the cracking was evident. Not sure who makes those, but tire makers are very sensitive about these types of things because their name is on the line. Stop in where you got them an act very concerned and that you are "thinking about a different brand of tires" and see what happens. Worked like a charm for me.
Couple of possibilities. You could be running a larger than stock tire that has a little too much camber. You could also be making some "high" speed corners that can wear tire like that. If you're going around corners quick, I'd inflate them to max as stated on the sidewall before you roll one of them over, break the bead, and lose the tire. You can also have some worn suspension parts in the front end. From the looks otherwise, these tires should go another 40,000 miles if cared for and the front end is in good shape.
Do you have larger tires that are hitting the front valence when turning? I have 35's, and even with a 6 in lift if sometimes I rub when turning on an incline or bump.
The tires are the stock size 20's that came with the truck. I had the truck checked in October before we took it to Florida (from Ohio) because I had a pop from the steering column. The column ended up getting replaced but the checked the whole front end and said it was as tight as when it was new. As for high speed turns, I do drive a lot of back roads so that could be a possibility. I did end up taking them to the store that I bought them at, and had them inspected. They told me that they really didn't see anything abnormal and just continue rotating them more frequently.
Thanks for all the help!
